DOT 5.1 Brake Fluid
Anybody tried it? I'm going to convert mine soon and was just wondering if anyone else has tried it. BTW, the fluid I'm looking at is a non-silicone Polyglycol compound.
Check it out here: http://www.synlube.com/brake.htm If I ever get around to rebuilding the 3.3, after the break-in it will be running synlube oil/atf/gear lube. |

isnt 5.1 only recommended for track use? Also, wont most lines not like 5.1? and finally how are you going to make sure you've got 100% of the 3 out before you put in the 5.1?

DOT 5 fluid is a SILICONE-based brake fluid. Used primarily on the racing circuit, it does not absorb moisture and does not harm paint.
Silicone DOT 5 fluid has some other characteristics that you should beware of. Silicone fluid compresses slightly under pressure, which can cause a slightly spongy brake pedal feel. Silicone fluid also attracts air more than polyglycol fluid does, which makes brake bleeding harder. It also tends to vaporize slightly just below its boiling point; and it will aerate from prolonged vibration. All of these factors mean that DOT 5 silicone fluid should never be used in an antilock brake system, as operating efficiency will be reduced. DOT 5.1 is a non-silicone SYNTHETIC brake fluid that is designed to be compatible with modern ABS systems. DOT 3, 4, and 5.1 are polyglycol ether-based chemistries and will mix with each other without a complete flushing. This is similar to being able to mix synthetic and conventional motor oils together in your engine or synthetic and regular tranny fluids. These type fluids are hygroscopic (meaning they have an ability to mix with water and still perform adequately.) However, water will drastically reduce the boiling point of fluid. In a passenger car this is not an issue. In a race car it is a major issue because as the boiling point decreases the performance ability of the fluid also decreases. DOT 5.1 also has a higher wet and dry boiling point than the DOT 3, 4 or the silicone DOT 5. WET BOILING POINT: DOT 3 +284°F DOT 4 +311°F DOT 5 SILICONE +356°F DOT 5.1 Long Life +424°F DRY BOILING POINT: DOT 3 +401°F DOT 4 +446°F DOT 5 Silicone +500°F DOT 5.1 +585°F For a simple explanation of wet and dry boiling points, check this thread: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...threadid=21717 Final answer. You should be able to use the Synthetic DOT 5.1 without any problems in your SVX. If you are a spirited driver/braker, the boiling points are in your favor. The wet boiling point of the 5.1 fluid is fairly equivalent to the dry boiling point of the DOT 4.

I was using ATE super Blue racing fluid, but have recently changed over to GS610 fluid. It has better specs than any of the others. But at $40.00/pint, its definitely not cheap!
