'1,200+ Miles in the Justy...'

...or 'Look, Honey - Another Water Tower that Doesn't Have an Ass...'

...or 'Do You Think a Dozen Pair of Toasti-Toes Will Be Enough?'

Okay, so we made it, for better or for worse. I had a day tp make adjustments to the car in between two driving days. I replaced the front brake pads, put in a CD deck (tape deck died after half a CD) and I *thought* that I fixed a draft in the heating.

Fifteen minutes into driving day 2, I found that I did not. Eventually, after several stops, I got another blanket and a bunch of boot warmers (Toasti-Toes). Those were sufficient for the rest of the trip.

Mileage varied. During the first day, the drive was flat and I kept up a consistent 75mph. I averaged 35-40mpg and got to Charlotte on less than $15 of gas. The second day I kept up 80mph through the mountains and got between 27 and 35mpg. Not bad, considering the cold, elevation changes and the 500lbs of luggage.

That was undoubtably the longest trip that car ever took under it's own power.

And I assure you it will be the last. I love the car, but it is NOT meant for long trips.

Nick,

Glad you made it.

One question:

How did you get 500 lbs. of luggagge plus 2 people in/on a Justy?

Very...

...carefully.

No, really, 500lbs is probably overestimating it. I'd figure about 300. I could fit inside Amber's largest suitcase, which we call The Beast.

Those of you who are married (and some of you who are not)are probably familiar with the women-luggage connection.

As for future trips (which I assure you will either not be that long or not in that car), I plan on getting a safari rack for the car. <G>

To all those who studied Latin,

The latin word for baggage train is "Impedimenta"
This word was used repeatedly by Julius Ceasar in his notes on his Gaelic campaign (2nd year HS Latin). Of corse Ceasar was married and his wife, Calpurnia, had an baggage train of her own.

Larry III
PS: The longer that you're married, the longer the "Impedimenta" becomes. I may need a semi (18 wheeler) to get the "Beautiful Naviguesser" and my SVX to Lafayette, Indiana.

My wife's family lives in Charlotte, so we took 75 through Georgia and then 85 to Charlotte. From there we took 77 all the way to 80/90, which got us pretty close to home.

My wife and I did the same trip (MI to NC) 80/90 to I-77 both ways in the VW with the dogs and a cargo box. Didn't get your mileage but with the heated seats we didn't need Tosti-toes either.
How about that water tower! No, really its a peach, REALLY IT IS!

Next time, give us a shout ahead of time. We live just a few miles from I-77 and could meet you at Tamarack for a cup/snack/chat.

Don't tell me: Bar-B-Q'd Boloney at the place where we had lunch? (Gotta try that place again at a time when . . . um . . . I'm feeling better than I was then.)

Thanks for the invite Don. We don't get down to Charlotte nearly enough. My in-laws are great people and I love the Charlotte area. My mother-in-law put the hard sell on us to relocate down there. Maybe in the future.
