Tense Morning

This weekend, I decided to clean the Throttle Body on "ET." It was idling a bit "sputtery." Did the deed, put everyting back together again, and she sat the rest of the weekend. I didn't want to start her until all the cleaner had disappated.

Got in this morning and she fired right up. Super. Then, the idle started "pulsating." Weird. She ran fine, but, when I'd come to a stop, the needle bounced up and down and and the revs were going up and down. Weird. I figured the computer was trying to find its range with the newly cleaned T/B. Sure 'nuff, by the time I'd gotten to work, the idle had leveled out.

Got in the car to go to lunch. Fired right up, revved, died. I restarted. Fired up, revved, died. @$%#@!!! Then, it dawned on me. I must've missed a hose. Sure 'nuff, opened the hood, took off the T/B cover, and looked underneath the intake. One of the hoses to the intake had slipped off. Attached it and fired up and headed off to lunch, all was well and the "sputtery" idle was also gone.

Bring on Reading! YeeHa!

That's awesome, Randy! I had the same problem a couple years ago... sputter and die at idle. I never figured out what it was, though... and it eventually just went away. What hose was disconnected? Vaccuum line, PCV, EGR?

I could tell the problem before I even got to your solution. My wife's old 1990 Legacy had vacuum problems galore, and it loped badly until I fixed every stupid one.

The dumb part was that, coming off the crankcase, there was a plastic junction that had three different size hoses attached to it. The only place I could get it, of course, was the dealer. Stupid thing cost me like $30. I think it ended up being like $60 in hoses for that one area.

It was the large hose that runs under the plastic intake and "hooks" into the clip underneath.

Any time you get that "die at idle" it's usually one of three things: MAF Sensor, a hose to the intake broken or disconnected, a crack in the the plastic intake or in the hose from the MAF sensor to the intake. Or, so I've gathered by my many years of following SVX forums (going on 5 now ). The knowledge gained through these forums has been priceless.

Been there done that and now suffering!

I did the exact same thing that Randy did. Cleaned the TB put everything back together and now a erratic sputtery idle. I looked and looked for any disconnected hoses which I never found. Now I deal with a jerky idle! I hope I can isolate my coughs soon!

You might check for cracks in the plastic connections on the intake itself, or the hose leading to the MAF. Also, did you you use a mirror to check to make sure your "butterflies" were clean? I thought I'd soaked mine down pretty good, 'til I took a mirror and checked 'em. Dang, they were dirty. Spray, wipe, look, spray wipe, look.

Oh, and make sure you didn't "flap" the rubber where it attaches to the intake. I've done that before too. Sometimes it's not noticable when it's on the underside.

Yes I had a small mirror. It was running fine until I took it all apart. I thought cleaning the TB wouldn't hurt either. I beleive the the two flanges are flush the inlets but I'll have to double check everything tomorrow... hose by hose.. We'll see what we find tomorrow!

Wait a sec... is that the plastic box that sits underneath the plastic "H-6" logo on our engines? If so, I think I know why my car is so hard to start lately...
