Staggered as in wider or different diameters? Either way I don't think it is a great idea. You will hvae a hard time finding appropriate tire sizes to match overall diameters front to back. This is necessary to keep the AWD in good order.

staggered as in a little wider tire in the back than the front. for example 19 inch wheel by 8 wide in the front and 19 inch wheel by 9 inch in the back. only an inch wider not no more. that inch shouldnt affect the awd that much. still the same 19 inch circumferance all the way around. now the 19 inch wheel for the awd might be harder to push .granted.

think of the tire geometry though.. If you buy the same tires all the way around, then the ones in back will be stretched slihgtly, causing a smaller rolling circumference. If you DON't buy the same tires all the way around, the rolling radii also won't be the same. Both ways you're causing excess wear on the transfer case.

not to mention that theres more room in front than back for wider tires

Now, if you're still interested, some companies (mostly japanese) make wheels specifically for cars like the skyline, Sti, EVo etc. some of these companies make wheels that have wider rears than fronts, and come with tires that makes everything work out. big money involved. (I think longassname had these on his car, but then removed them... )

And from a performance standpoint, wouldn't it be better to put the wider tires up front?

ehh, not really, when you need more grip, the tranny is sending power equally to all 4 tires. you could argue the weight transfer will help the rears and not the fronts.. but eitherway, this would be a looker mod, not a performance deal i mean, how many people do you know that can burn the tires from a stop on dry pavement? (other than the few 4.44 guys.)

if the tires are more than 1/4" different in circumference, kiss your tranny goodbye.
