Then again, my charger is 30 years old. Did charge another battery with no problem. The gauge never goes over 5 amps.
Thoughts anyone?

Organic chemist here. Hydrogen gas could be released by overcharging a battery. And having blown up a balloon filled with hydrogen (for science of course), I know it can definitely cause a big enough explosion like what happened here.

Re: Battery Lessons 101

Wow! Thank you icingdeath88. Charger to garbage tonight. I was shaken by the possible injuries this could have caused, besides the trauma of the blast. I hope this is a lesson and eye opener to all who view this thread.
Another comment, when my son took the battery to AutoZone, the manager said, "What the hell happened, do you have an aftermarket sound system amplifier?" Any truth to that?

Earl recommended one a long time back that I also bought and like.

Edit: found it. http://www.amazon.com/Multi-12-Volt-.../dp/B000FQBWCY
It has a setting for gel batteries like the optima ones.

AFAIK the hydrogen and oxygen are released only when charging, not when being depleted. Most likely what happened in your case is that the battery filled with H2 and O2 while charging, and then a spark when you started to crank the car caused it to ignite and explode (making H2O). Discharging the battery quickly could create a lot of heat, maybe enough to ignite the H2 if some was already there, but the electrons would be flowing in the wrong direction to make the H2, so I don't think a powerful sound system could cause something like this.
