check engine light came on

It was 1 F out side this morning I started the car and let it warm for 10 minutes. After driving for about a mile the check engine light came on. Could this be due to the cold?

I'd pull the ECU codes and see what it said. Mine did that and it was a TPS.

1)Remove the kick panel just beside the left foot rest on the driver's side.
2) Locate blue wires.
3) Locate black connector. Hold it notch up.
4) With ignition off, insert one of the wires into top row, 2nd pin from left.
5) Turn key to on position, but do not start the car.
6) Watch blinky check engine light on dashboard. Count blinks. Long blinks = 10, Short blinks = 1.
7) Keep watching blinky light until you get mesmorized.

To clear codes (after problem has been resolved):

1) With engine off, stick the blue wires to 1st and 2nd pin in the top row counting from left on the black connector, with notch facing up.
2) Start car. Shut off car. Remove pins.
3) Read codes to make sure they are clear. No codes = steady blinks at 1/4 second intervals.

13 Cam Position Sensor or Circuit (TDC Sensor on Justy)
14 Fuel Injector No. 1 (Legacy, Impreza, Justy, SVX)

15 Fuel Injector No. 2 (Legacy, Impreza, Justy, SVX)

To perform the TCU self diag test for EXISTING problems
1) Warm up engine by driving at speeds greater than 12mph.
2) Stop vehicle and turn ignition switch OFF.
3) Turn ignition switch ON and make sure POWER indicator lamp comes on.
4) Turn ignition switch OFF.
5) Move selector lever to D and turn manual switch ON.
6) Turn ignition switch ON.
7) Move selector lever to "3" and turn manual switch OFF.
8) Move selector level to "2" and turn manual switch ON.
9) Move selector lever to "1" and turn manual switch OFF.
10) Partially depress accelerator pedal (to turn idle switch off).
11) Check code as displayed on POWER light. Blinking once every 1/4sec is normal.

To perform the TCU self diag test for PREVIOUS problems
1) Warm up engine by driving at speeds greater than 12mph.
2) Stop vehicle and turn ignition switch OFF.
3) Turn ignition switch ON and make sure POWER indicator lamp comes on.
4) Turn ignition switch OFF.
5) Move selector lever to "1" and turn manual switch ON.
6) Turn ignition switch ON.
7) Move selector lever to "2" and turn manual switch OFF.
8) Move selector lever to "3" and turn manual switch ON.
9) Move selector lever to "D" and trun manual switch OFF.
10) Partially depress accelerator pedal (to turn idle switch off).
11) Check code as displayed on POWER light. Blinking once every 1/4sec is normal.

It's important to note: there are two black connectors. A big one and a little one. You'll want to use the smaller of the two. Otherwise, by inserting the probe into pin 2 (notch side up) of the "big" one, you'll get an ABS warning light. Don't ask me how I know.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago. Turns out it was a sticky EGR valve. Hasn't happened again.

EGR vacuum hoses on a lot of cars are prone to collecting moisture inside them that freezes in cold weather. When the computer commands the valve to open and nothing happens it will turn the light on - it usually takes two consecutive drive cycles, on most cars, to set the light.

In this description of how to pull the codes it was well described except the probe positions. As far as I can see only one was accounted for. Does the other one go to ground and is it just test light probes you're talking about or a piece of more sophicated equip.? Pretty amazing the number of checks availuable here.

If you are referring to the blue wires you will only need to use one. It doesn't matter which one you use.

I found a yellow connector, and the 2 blue wires no problem, but didn't find either of the 2 black connectors mentioned. Are they wrapped up in tape or something?

As I posted in the other thread, the connectors are poked into a hole in the A-pillar. Just start tugging bundles of wires, and you'll find them. The smaller of the two black connectors is the one you'll want to use. The blue wires are usually tucked into the tape that wraps the wires leading to the connector you'll need.

Question Help pls

hey my check engine light comes on and comes off sometimes, i ve run that operation, and it gave me code of 32 which is oxygen sensor or circuit right side
where s that sensor and what can be the problem?
is the sensor on the right exhaust? if so , then i had power steering fluid all ova that place due to crack in power steer hose, now its fixed... hmmm Help ppl

If the fluid leak is fixed then it may be a good idea to replace that sensor.

sorry to drag back dead threads BUT....

My CE light just came on again, and i tried this, didn't work... does it work on post 96 cars that have the OBDII system?? it looks like theres not even a wire going into the back of that slot in the plug... any help??

Nope...not sure how to pull codes on 96's and 97's without extra electronics. You'll probably be better off to purchase a device to plug in to the OBD-II connector to get your codes.
