Forester 1999/2000 reliability

Seems like we need a family barge next to the SVX which will hopefully be bought in a few months time (they use salt on the roads here now).

Been looking at Forester Turbo S (Euro spec), 170 bhp, full option package etc.. been going for typically 180-220k km...

So.. if service history is OK and no obvious defects, is it worth it going for a cheap and old one? Or am I going to end up spending my SVX budget repairing this car?

Actual experience please, I also know Subarus are generelly of good build quality.

Watch out for head gasket issues with the 2.5 engine, which is in the Forester. Many/most 2.5 liter engines Subaru made from 96-04 exhibit head gasket failure under normal driving conditions, but catching the problem early or preventative maintenance installation of the updated gaskets has helped prevent future issue.

if you buy it i would recommend to change the filter in the oil line to the turbo. even if it appears maintained these like to plug up, starve the turbo for oil, and burn it up. i have replaced several turbos because of this cheap little screen. not easy to put in but well worth the piece of mind.
