Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.

I was wavering for a while not sure if I wanted to actually do it or not, but I have finally made the decision to get off my ass and go ahead and refinish my BBS wheels. I had planned to do this last year when I bought them, but just never did. I don't plan on starting them till after the Reading meet though (I don't want to rush). I am just going to do a standard gun metal, and plan on fixing a few areas of curb rash.
I was looking around the internet and found a few thing that inspired me quite a bit. Has anyone ever used bondo to repair chips and scratches on their wheels? I know, everyone hates bondo, but it is either that or paint directly over the damaged areas. One of my wheels has a pretty big gouge, the other 3 just have minor rash.

This will be the color.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.

I like your option 1.

When I have painted wheels I just used masking tape in short strips around the rim then cut a circle the diameter of the wheel out of a green garbage bag, then taped the bag to the tape on the tires. That green Frog tape works really well. I'd be afraid of overspray just using the cards, since you have to shoot sideways to get the edges of the spokes. The frog tape will also stop any runs around the bead working their way back up the tire.

Be sure to use proper paint and let it cure properly. I once used regular car paint from Dupont that I had mixed at NAPA. Put it on over zinc primer then used wheel clear coat. Looked great, but by the end of the summer the paint was full of cracks under the clear. The clear is still smooth.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.

For a moment I was tempted to sell because I know SickSubie has a nice set of gunmetal for sale. After checking his thread though, it looks like those are "sale pending". ..And in truth I have too much invested into these wheels and tires to really sell them.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.

Gunmetal and grey wheels always look like they are covered in brake dust to me.

I'd like to see some BBS' in the stock SVX wheel silver color (brighter silver, not the dingy looking darker silver). It'd still be a darker silver than the stock BBS silver, but I think it would go with the car nicely.

Just my $0.02

Check out the 92 Ebony with those silver BBS STis (mine) in the recent thread titled "Sharing a new picture and .. " . The good pic is in the third from last comment, I think.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.

when i painted my stockers, i masked off the tire around the rim and coated the rest of the tire in tire shine gel, so when it got painted it just washed off with the gel

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.

I finally switched the SVX back to stock wheels so that I can start this project. Seems like most people remove the balancing weights before painting. Mine are the kind that stick on the inside of the wheel. I am figuring to remove mark and replace them. I also have a fairly bad gash on the edge of one wheel. Anyway I can fix that while I am at it?

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.

Sand it, degrease it, and use Bondo. Re sand, prime and paint. You will find nice videos on Youtube.
