Come on IRENE!

How many of us are in Irenes path, and what are your plans as she bears down on us. Hope your svxi's are safe and sound. NYC may take a direct hit of strong Cat 1 or even a Cat 2 Hurricane. NYC has not had a direct hit from a hurricane since the late 1800's Talk about way overdue. Hope everyone stays safe, and has plenty of batteries.

Reminds me of Gloria which hit CT more than NYC. I lived in Ansonia, CT at the time and my wife and I had just started dating. Her father was out of town so I went to her house to secure the propane tank outside and hang out with her and her mother during the storm. The mother-in-law never appreciated it. She gradually evolved into a bitter old person. Her father died from stress induced issues stemming from living with such a bitter person.

I hate to say this but I hope it stays on more of an easterly track. You guys can handle the water better than we can here in upstate NY, the land of silty clay and no drainage.

Re: Come on IRENE!

Huskymaniac, I was dating a girl from Oxford, CT. She lived at 154 Christian St right near Oxford Airport, her name was Edee Eldridge I dated her from 1982-1986, thought we heading down the Isle, but things didnt pan out, she moved to New Hampshire to take a new job after graduating from Quinnipiac University. Anyway, that is freaky, we might have crossed paths back then, who knows. She had two brothers and two sisters, and her father worked at Avco Lycoming in Stratford, CT. I dont mind the rain, Im just fearing the strong winds, estimated to be 75-95 MPH possibly.

I don't have two pumps that run simultaneously but I installed a battery backup pump in case we lose power and I am not home while the water is gushing in. My primary pump is pretty hefty. We were pumping out something on the order of 400-450 gallons an hour back in April. The path into the sump hole looked like a waterfall. I managed to install a system that keeps the water off the floor but the thought of either the system failing or the pumps failing makes me nauseus. I am seriously thinking of moving to a different house.

My last house had a sump pump and I know the feeling of worrying about heavy rains and losing power. I had 4 pumps total. The main Pump, a Battery Back up Pump, a 1/4 horse pump that I could use if the water was coming in faster than the main pump could handle, and a new 1/2 horse power pump on shelf, just in case the main pump failed and a gas powered generator. The reason I had all this is crap was because my basement flooded several times due to pump burn out, clogged pumps, overwhelmed pumps and power outtages. I am so glad that I do not live there any longer.

Re: Come on IRENE!

We had 12 Generators at 3:00 last night and we had no generators when we opened this AM. We are getting 20 in for 5:00am tomorrow. Bet they are gone by 9:00am . I got a call about every hour today asking about pumps and generators .

It's funny. My wife has wanted to move for some time now. I have been stuck at trying to decide which was worse, the hell of moving or the periodic hell of worrying about the basement filling up with water because something failed. After years of the water saga, I am getting very close to moving to a hill top somewhere. Hey, at least interest rates are crazy low right now.....

Re: Come on IRENE!

I'm not sure if it will reach my house but I am concerned that on monday morning I will be flying into Philadelphia and I hope that the storm is long gone so I don't end up stranded in who knows where because a plane can't land in PHL.

I also have this huge walnut tree and a huge maple tree that worries me too

Re: Come on IRENE!

There is one positive with this storm, wherever it hits. All of the models have it moving very quickly by the time it reaches the Northeast.

Re: Come on IRENE!

Uhh, it seems as though there's a good chance she's interrupting my plans this weekend and forcing me to push certain things back a week... Maybe I should put comprehensive on the van since GC's book out insanely high compared to the real market value.
(for instance, my van books at $3500 in fair condition. I have a total of $900 into it at this point. )

It won't compare with the butter Yoda I saw in Toronto.
