97 Ebony Tranny issue

Ok, the 97 ebony I picked up last month for $800 has a tranny issue, and Im not sure but I think its junk. I had not driven the car when I bought it because of its idle problem and loud exhaust, had it flat bedded straight home. Yesterday I got it registered and drove it the five mile trip home from where it sat at my parents house. First off when your backing out of the driveway and turning the wheels it is binding real hard to where the car is practically stopping and need to give it more gas. Then it appears I only have 1st and 2nd gear. It shifted real hard out of first, and at 40 mph rpms are at 3000. It wont shift further if I attempt to go faster and rpms soar to 4000, so I back off. It still has a rough idle problem, which I thought was a MAF, but I swapped a good one from my polo and it still idles rough when warm. Too, bad, cause it had a nice smooth ride. Im picking up mikes 92 claret today, but I will most likely need a tranny for it. What do you guys think.

Re: 97 Ebony Tranny issue

In case you need it, here is a used transmission at a good price and you might be close enough to pick it up.

Re: 97 Ebony Tranny issue

sean486, thanks for the tip, but I dont want a 92 tranny for a 97. I would prefer 95 and up. Ilovesvx has one listed from his black 96 with only 89k on it. What do you guys think. I pmd him, waiting to hear back.

I would recommend a 4.44 trans. Better gear ratio and better torque. You can find one for 800$ with the moded diff from BudFreak on the SubrauSVXWorldforum. He has them in stock and is based in OH I believe.

Cool Re: 97 Ebony Tranny issue

The 4.44 changes the personality of the car considerably. Will feel much quicker, but compromise in smoothness and noise...You definitely will want to try before you convert. Reading is a great opportunity for this!

Re: 97 Ebony Tranny issue

Gordon, thanks for the tip, but I think Id rather have the stock tranny and have the option of using D and 3. I always drive my polo in 3 unless on freeway going over 60.

Re: 97 Ebony Tranny issue

Not to deny your claim at all, (seriously only saying this without emotion) I haven't read anything about the 4.44 not having a smooth shift. Did you own one before? I still have the stock tranny and am wondering about personal experiences on the 4.44 swap side. Most everyone I have heard with it suggests i do the same.
