Re: STeeL's built motor/turbo build

Dumb question from an even dumber person:

How do you check the fuel pressure? I rented a tester from Auto Zone and the directions with it plus one very vague YouTube video lead me to believe I would T it in line between the fuel rail and the fuel filter... Doing this showed me 0 psi of pressure every time, even with the car running...

If you are Ting it into the pipe that runs from the front connection on the filter, to the front of the fuel pipe block, it should show about 36psi pressure when you turn the key on.
If it does not then, A the pump is not working. B the pressure reg is not holding pressure. C the pump is only working when the starter is working.

Re: STeeL's built motor/turbo build

I put it in directly after the filter and before the metal hose that runs under the intake. It showed zero when I turned the key 20 different times, though I can hear the pump running... And If I try to start the car like this, it comes on and runs like it usually does. The button to release pressure on the tester does nothing, and taking the T out drips fuel all over the place. Only thing I can think of I didn't do that was in the directions was put the 6 foot tube that drips out the excess fuel into an approved container.. I just let it hang off the side of the car onto the ground (not a drop ever came out of it anyway)

If that is correct, can I assume the tester does not work?

Re: STeeL's built motor/turbo build

If you fit the T and the hose to the gauge, but leave the gauge off the pipe, does it pump fuel out the hose when you turn the key on?
If fuel is pumped out, and when you fit the gauge on the pipe, is shows no pressure. Either the gauge is dud (not likley) or the fuel is just getting pumped around the circuit with out any pressure, due to the pressure reg not holding it to a pressure.

The vid that you showed look like it had pressure when it started, but ran out of fuel as it ran.

Harvey.

I tried unplugging just the first two injectors closest to the front on the left ride. The first one didn't seem to do much, the second one seemed to make it worse, so I thought I'd just try my luck with replacing that first injector. I have 5 of them still in the fuel rail off my spare engine. Well, 4 now.. I can't get the ****ers out of there without destroying them. Looked up a quick guide on removing them and the video says they should simply pull right out... Not happening. I couldn't pull out out with channel locks...
Looks like an air leak. SVX like several other Subaru's ECU's will start using ECU defined knowledge (ignoring MAF airflow). It then transitions over to the MAF data - if the MAF is wrong (due to leak) then it stalls around 10-20 seconds. I had a Liberty do this last weekend and last night started my SVX to prove said point with no intake connected. A person I know spent $7,000 dollars trying to figure out a similar issue... when we got the car we noticed an intercooler pipe had blown off under the bumper... !!

Re: STeeL's built motor/turbo build

Bazza,
Here's a pic of the FPG I've got piped into my system. Has worked like a charm from the start.
Cheers,
Bill

That is exactly how I did mine.

What do you suggest I do next then?

But there is no fuel pressure gauge installed in the video you posted

Remember - Fuel, Air, Spark -

So, how about this:

1. Will the engine continue to run if you hold the throttle body butterflies open (AIR)?

2. Do you actually have steady fuel to the injectors (FUEL)?

3. Are all the coils good (SPARK)?

I agree with Harvey in that the video sounds like it is running out of gas. Can you post a video with a fuel pressure gauge installed? My guess is that you're getting a pulse of fuel and then the fuel pump is shutting off.

Good luck.
Bill

I didn't buy a fuel pressure gauge, I just rented a testing tool. It isn't made to sit permanently in the bay even if I didn't have to give it back. That, and I didn't have it when I made the video

You do need to make sure that there is fuel pressure going to the engine all the time. Got to fit the pressure gauge, and check that there is pressure when you turn the key on, when the starter is working and when it is idling.

The pump is controlled by the ECU with different stages.
It runs for a few seconds when the key is turned on, and then it stops.
It then runs while the starter is working, if the engine does not fire, the pump stops.
It will then run all the time when the engine starts and runs.

We need to know if the pump keeps running in all the stages, as it could just run to build pressure, but stops running when the starter stops working, so that there is no pressure to keep the engine running.

Harvey.
