Fixing lifters on 2.0 Mazda 626

Well my moms 1997 Mazda 626 crapped out yesterday. She ran it dry and put in used oil. Well I tried starting it and the lifters tick very bad but go away when you rev it. It blows a lot of blue smoke out of the exhaust (has worn rings). She also said that the temp gauge rose up and she put the heat on full blast to help it a little. Is this worth fixing the lifters/other attached componants or should it go to car hell. Also if it seems fixable how would I go about removing the lifters and getting torque specs for them. thanks

Re: Fixing lifters on 2.0 Mazda 626

raising temp?

did the head gasket go?

Lifters are really easy and you can do them in an inline 4 in about an hour or two.

Re: Fixing lifters on 2.0 Mazda 626

Well I just torn in the motor and the lifters don't looked scoured. I did find that both the accessory belts were toast which is why I think the temp rose because the water pump wasn't going. I'm going th advance auto to get some new belts and a can of seafoam and see what happens from there.

if you need any more help, check out the guys at performanceprobe.com. It's a very knowledgable place and your 626 uses the same engine as the probe of that year

Re: Fixing lifters on 2.0 Mazda 626

Thanks. It turns out the valves maybe bad. I got the new belts on and ran 1/2 a can of seafoam in it for about 5 min. I'm going to change the oil tomorrow and add the rest of the seafoam in it and see what happens.
Edit: I looked at that site and cannot find anything related to my problem

Re: Fixing lifters on 2.0 Mazda 626

The lifters pound the plungers internally and are destroyed if they loose oil. I would be willing to bet the car is not worth fixing, because it probably needs at least valve seals, and depending on how low on oil, bearings, or a block. You know it burns oil so it probably needs some major engine work.

Re: Fixing lifters on 2.0 Mazda 626

Today I took it to my girlfriends pap who is a mechanic to look at it. After hearing it and seeing the cloudy trail of smoke behind me we came to the conclusion that some of the valves are shot, possibly more than 1 broken piston ring. So the motors junk and the car may go to the junkyard even with a good 5 speed in it.

Re: Fixing lifters on 2.0 Mazda 626

That generation of 626 is fairly problematic anyway...

Time to find her a Legacy!

Re: Fixing lifters on 2.0 Mazda 626

There was actually a 92' Ebony SVX down the road with a blown tranny I wanted her to get but I think the person who owned it took it to the junkyard.

Re: Fixing lifters on 2.0 Mazda 626

I know where one is, but it's going to cost near $1000 for the motor+labor.

Well you'll have to actually get inside the forum and look around. Look for the 2.0 engine from the SE
