Re: HELP! 430 miles from home...

It almost sounds like when a car jumps timing....I know you checked it, but........It couldn`t jump it at the crank or cam could it....I just hope the one I just got never has your problem, I think I would just give it away....lol...
Good luck with it....

Re: HELP! 430 miles from home...

Thanks again to Scott (Sperry) for coming out and letting me try his cam sensor. Unfortunately that wasnt the problem....

Destination, Lithia Subaru and the $109 diag fee

Im sure its something simple but the solution has so far eluded me

Re: HELP! 430 miles from home...

I just realized something that may help.... I went around the same left turn my car died on, in my moms RAV4, and noticed theres some pretty bad jarring from potholes at the exact spot my car stalled. I think now something got jarred loose! Forgive me for not knowing, but where is the ECU at? I thought it was behind the pass side kick panel for some reason.... I want to check all my grounds and power feeds before giving in and going to Lithia...who ive been reading arent all that swell.

Re: HELP! 430 miles from home...

get on your back under the driver's side dash...look up and to your right (to the right of the steering column...two boxes caged together... one is the ECU, one is the TCU...they both have connectors on the edge closest to you

SoCal picked up my spare pulleys last night. Said he was going to install them today when it was warmer out.

Hopefully it's running by now and he's on his way back to LA from Reno... it's a long drive and I know he's anxious to get back since he's been up here in the snow for a week longer than he was planning!

Re: HELP! 430 miles from home...

Yes, thanks again to Scott (Sperry) for saving my ass up here!! I really owe you man.... I wont forget it! The car is back up and running great! Your pulley u sold me matched the one that had the outer seal jump off of and that one was rough....i got lucky there. The cool guys nearby at sears auto compressed my tensioner for me. Bam bam it was together and runs great now. Had to run around for insurance parts.... new jack, new seprentine belt in case the powersteering pump snaps, etc. and get the tire rebalanced. So much for Lithia Subauru and their $1081.33............. Off to Victorvile early AM tomorrow....wish me luck fellas

P.S. When it first started,,,,it was billowing white and blue smoke out in thick clouds for about a minutet, i almost loaded my shorts. After a few revvs it went away. Lots of unburn fuel in there. Wouldnt pass smog so back to socal to yank plugs and clean some stuff. But its running and driving. yAAAAAHHHHHOOOOOOOOA

Re: HELP! 430 miles from home...

So glad to hear it's running! I've been thinking about the whole jumped timing thing and how we thought if it jumped at the cam you'd think only that half of the motor wouldn't run. But in retrospect, it's kinda obvious that if one cam were to skip, the belt would retension out the slack and effectively put both cams out by half a tooth. Something that wouldn't be totally noticeable from looking at the timing marks alone... You'd really have to count the teeth between both cams and the crank sprocket to be sure.

It's a shame no one thought of that before paying for the diag. But at least it's running!
