timing idler pulley & gear interchangeability from EJ to EG

I was looking at 1stsubaruparts.com and they list the timing idler pulley, idler gear and idler as the same part for both the SVX and the EJ SOHC engines.

Rockauto.com has these as different part numbers for the EJ22 and the EG33.

It seems like it would be possible to use the pulleys and gears from the EJ. Has anyone tried this?

Main reason I am asking is it's a lot cheaper to buy a EJ22 timing belt kit w/the pulleys and gears and then buy a EG33 timing belt, than buy the timing belt kit by itself.

I wouldn't doubt it. I found a ridiculous number of interchangable parts, both OEM and performance, between the EG33 and the EJ18/22/25. Might wanna check with Tom or, err, Tom.

One thing I don't understand, is why with the EG33 they drove one cam on each side with the belt, and then the other cam is gear driven off the belt driven cam, so if the belt breaks the cams can't turn independently, but with the EJ25 four cam, they drove both cams with the belts, making it an interference motor.

Typically interference motors can make more power. Thats really all I could think of when I asked the same questions. The prototype engine had 4 cam pulleys. I would guess they changed that to fit the accessories with a low profile hood... Maybe??

Re: timing idler pulley & gear interchangeability from EJ to EG

took an EJ18 idler gear and laid it next to a EG33 gear.

The EG33 is taller. The EJ18 gear is the same width as the EG33 timing belt.

The idler pulleys are the same thickness.

There is a timing belt kit on E-bay right now for less than $200 and i can do local pickup so I am going with that.

Yea that is your best bet... The timing belt is slightly wider to make up for turning four cams running 6cylinders rather than four.

Re: timing idler pulley & gear interchangeability from EJ to EG

I went with the kit from eBay, it was great, and included the water pump. My local (not SVX specialist) mechanic charged a couple of hundred to put it all in. He checked the front main seal as well, and found it completely dry. So now I guess I'm good for 60+ K miles 'till I have to do it again. And since I seem to be putting somewhat less than 6K miles per year, that'll be a long time off.
