Holy crap...450 is a steal!...The parts alone were over 1000 dollars I thought and labor...another 1000. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Hi.

Thanks, guys!

Why do you think you need to replace it?

yeah the power steering rack is VERY expensive, i just bought a brand new OEM about a year ago for $800 from liberty subaru, the prices vary a bit depending on what ps rack you have (speed vs. engine sensitive). To have it installed would have cost about 400 - 500. So the rack is definately not a cheap undertaking.

My power steering leaks A LOT and so I'm going to swap it with the rack on my parts car.

Do you guys have any tips on getting the old rack out of my car? I got all the bolts taken off but it's too wide to squeze out!!! I can't take off the subframe because the car's sitting on wood blocks right now.

sorry about the hijack.

rack and pinion, contd.

i took the car to a man who works on subarus. i was also told i needed a new alternator. (after i had to replace the battery) turns out, i needed an alternator belt, which also affects the steering. for $75 i fixed both problems. i had been asking two different repair shops to check the belts, which they said they had and were fine. pays to take the car to someone who actually knows what their doing. thanks again for all your help. slipped by the huge expense this time.

I lucked out, I bought a reman rack for less than $100 on E-bay (stocklifts@cerell.com) call them if they have more. My local mechanic installed it for $50.
