Dead Transmission... Options?

Just had my trasnsmission go... won't go above 2nd (if I'm lucky!).
Local Subaru dealer/shop quoted me about $6500+ fo a new one, and $5K for a rebuilt. Seems a bit much.

I'm in the NH Seacoast area....
anyone know any good garage / mechanic options for getting me back on the road? (Or for that matter... anyon want to make an offe on a 1995 ls/l 85Kmi?)

In the meantime... i'll be searching this sight for transmission info....

There are several options.

1) 5-speed conversion
2) 6-speed conversion
3) convert to auto with different gear ratios
4) Level 10 Transmission (rebuilt tranny that is better then origional)
5) find someplace else thats cheaper.
6) through caution to the wind and buy a used one from an online salvage company.

I'd recommend 4 if you just want to stay stock, but also add a tranny cooler.
If money is an issue, you can try #6. They usually offer a limited warrenty, just do a search for auto recyclers.
