If it was me though, my first action would be to pull the connector, look at it as if I was about to perform surgery on it, then blow really hard on the connectors to impress my wife.

Then I would put it back on, and drive for a second... just to see if it was a loose/sticky connection. (You did say the speedo would jump, and this type of sensor never goes "half the way out" like a temp sensor or an O2 sensor would. This square wave style speedo sensor either works or it doesn't.)

The fact that the speedo "jumps" is why I mentioned those little plastic gears that turn the speedo sensor...

Well, I finally caved and brought my SVX in to a shop (not a Subaru dealership, but a mechanic who actually owns an SVX himself!). Turns out I couldn't get the error codes to show because of an issue with my resistor.

As for the problems, it turns out that they may not be completely related:
I was told I would need to replace my ATF sensor to fix my shifting problem (apparently it may have been shifting too early) and my speed sensor module in the transmission to fix the speedometer issue.

Current cost est. for labor and parts is up to $700...
Does this sound about right? Anyone got these parts laying around? If yes, it'll make my Valentine day!

ATF Sensor???? Can't guess what this is. ATF Temperature sensor? would not affect the shifting. You may have got, what he said, confused.

Harvey.

I did actually, thanks for inquiring! According to the mechanic, my speed sensor and internal ATF sensor (?) were dead. He said the speed sensor was obviously affecting my speedometer, and that that the ATF sensor was messed up and affecting the shift points. With all the associated parts (including transmission filter, pan gasket, etc), diagnostic, and labor, I dropped somewhere close to $700... But at least my car is running fairly decently again!

On top of it all, the mechanic also noticed I had to replace my ball joints. So that was another $130.. With all said and done, I've still gotta save up for that 90k mi service. Apparently I have to fix some leaks as well. And I should probably get new brake pads and resurface my rotors. I love my car, but it sure is expensive to maintain!

I'd like to know what this mysterious 'internal ATF sensor' is.
