I'm curious as to what your padding looks like on the bottom side of your hood....I know there is a belt guard there, but do you have yours on? My legacy aircompressor belt appeared to rub away a section of my hood padding when I owned the car. Also, I notice a tight fit when I added my alt. upgrade positive wire to the top of my alt. belt guard.

My "hood padding" above where the bely is is COVERED in rubber shreds... When I took the belt off, it actually felt LIGHTER!!! Anyway, I think I found out what the problem may be... As far as I can tell there are no damaged wires in the engine bay (and I have spent alot of time looking)... What doug said about the "Christmas Tree Lights" I definitly can see... It has happened to me once before... Actually twice if ya count the first time that an alternator died on me in an SVX...
What I found: My room mate and I both looked at the alternator... I was almost convinced that it isn't a bad alternator, powersteering, or tensioner... So we both sat there and stared alittle... Then I said "Does that alternator pulley look like it is a few Millimeters off or is that just me??".... Nick looked at it too and he said, "Yep, it looks to be sticking out infront of the rest of the pullies by only a hair or two... Barely noticable..." I went and got a straight edge and held it up to the alternator pulley... Sure enough, it didnot line up flush with the powersteering pulley... What I'm gonna do: Gonna send my alternator back to the parts shop for a refund. Go to Subaru and get an alternator and from them that is SVX Specific also get an OEM belt and put those on... That should take care of my problem... If it doesn't I will be back on here telling youguys.... Thanks for all the help!!! Tom, I need to talk to ya about your 6MT swap sometime :-)

From my experience when I rebuilt my PS pump, that is not normal. The main working part of the pump is a paddle wheel, not a piston, and internally the seal isn't so good that it won't allow back flow. If yours gets really hard to turn, then the bearing may be failing.

That makes sense.....if it's off by a hair, either the belt will shred and pinch it's self to the one side of the pulley flange or it may want to jump the pulley.
Where did you get your last alternator? Just a regular parts store or something? |
