What do you charge per hour for a tech writting?

I just added a pics to my locker under Tranny Tear Down of a really dirty internal filter. My last dead tranny.

Again great job man.

Hey, my services are always free to SVXers! Always willing to lend a hand as several members - newsvx, svxcess, Ron Mummert, svxfiles, rufus, svxride, green_eyed_lady - have personally helped me with projects on my car in the past.

After seeing the internal filter on your dead trans, and the one I pulled from Andrew's car, I may change the one on my car within the next 1-2 months just for peace of mind.

When I get my car back from the paint shop, I am going to change the one in it. I have seen some screens that are almost plugged and that can't be very good.

Chike - I hope the write up was to your satisfaction.

I finally got my tranny pan to drop with that red gasket maker stuff. Ended up bending the lip of the pan slightly, but a hammer fixed that.

Glad I made the second effort cause the filter has some metal flakes in it. But even more so, the donut magnet stuck to the bottom of the pan was caked with a mixture of flakes and thick grease like substance. I didn't even realize it was a removable magnet at first it was so caked.

Put a new gasket in that came with the aftermarket filter. No leaks so far!!!

Btw, my first tranny pan drop and just a heads-up, can be very messy.

A very thorough & exemplary piece of work, Chike. I gleefully await the complete Chike/Chilton SVX Manual for Dummies which I'm sure will be forthcoming anon.

Ron (Time to watch "24" now).

Great writeup. I would have liked to see a side by side photo of the old and new filters to see what all are different.

I would do these writeups but I get so involved with the work that I always forget to take pictures and notes.

Thanks Ron! An SVX manual for dummies - now that would be a real 'labor of love'...

On the top portion of the filter, there's not much difference. The round tube that goes up into the trans is practically identical.

On the bottom of the filter, however, the factory filter has a smaller rectangular area for the ATF to come out of, while the Advanced Auto Parts filter has a larger square area. This rectangular area on factory filter also sticks out a good 1/4" more...

Here's a pic from when I replaced the filter in my trans (while doing the Solenoid C replacement - thanks again, Tom!)

So, Chike... The part number that you supplied for the transmission pan gasket is: 31397AA040. The number that subaruparts.com gives me for my FWD '94 is: 31397AA041. Does anyone know the difference? Chike, what year was the car that was worked on? I'd like to do this, but as the SVX is my only form of transportation, I kinda have to get it right.

I just looked at my replacement filter that I bought from NAPA, and it looks just like the old one. It has a smaller screen surface and looks like the old one taken off of Andrew's car.

The NAPA part number is 1-8561. Hope this helps, and now it is making me think!

Deruvian,

I worked on Andrew's '92 LS-l. Not sure how different the filter is in a fwd SVX though...

The Advance Auto Parts part# for the awd SVX trans is the same as the one for the awd Impreza Outback trans (checked since I have an Impreza 4EAT).
