Rear Brake Line HELP needed. Please

I need to replace both rear metal lines and was looking to see if anyone has done this before? I have access to Subarunet.com and online Service Manuals but I can not seem to find directions for replacing those.

It took almost 2 months to obtain both of the lines from Japan....what an hassle that was.

Any help is appreciated. Oh yeah, and its my '92 if that makes any difference!

I have done it on my 92. Can be done without removing gas tank. Did it 2 summers ago, so my memory is a little rusty just like the brake lines I took out!! Removed muffler, sheild, and brackets. Can't remember if I had rear bumper off or not. Car on jack stands and rear wheels off, of course. For the long one (drivers side) was able to position it throught the hole? from wheel and then position it behind the tank. Without the muffler etc in the way you can position from the rear. Probably won't be able to place it in the plastic clips behind the tank.
The shorter one on the passenger side was easier I think.

There is a little square junction brake line connector near the rear passenger side that both lines connect to. Be careful not to break the lines here on the side that runs through the hole under the rear seat!! Like I did. You can get a good look at this connector from under the bottom cushion of the rear seat. There is a rubber grommet that you remove first.
Good Luck

Thanks for the response. So, I'm assuming that the rear Subframe does not need to be removed and it is possible to work the lines in place without removing anything major (besides the exhaust which my car doesn't have right now)???

Right now I'm a very happy man if thats the case. I was about ready to fork out the 8-12 hour labor bill at the Subaru Dealer if the subframe needed to be dropped....and at $82/hr it would not be cheap!

Thanks

You definitely don't have to remove the subframe. You have to remove brackets for sway bar if I remember correctly. Did your lines rust out? If rear diff out of the way it would be easier.

The lines were rusty but I believe I something happened to the driver's side when I was doing the 5spd swap. Probably when I had the rear diff out or something back there as the lines were fine before......and when I had finished the swap is when I started having problems.

Really. It must be because that was a couple years ago. It seems that parts for these cars are becoming very low quantity (at least some of them)....and our dealership has had to order quite a few parts from Japan (incl. my windshield, door mirror, etc..)!

I seriously do not know how you managed to do this. I've done 3 transmission swaps in my garage with just basic tools, floor jack, and stands....but I can not get those lines through that time hole which is on the passengers side.

Do you think you removed the rear bumper???

Well, I managed to get the driver's side (long one) in....although the already bent line bent again in a few places. The passenger's side just did not want to go through that hole....and it got stuck. I tore the SOB out and beat the cement with it.

I'm thinking that I'm just going to go to Autozone and buy a 4" line with the ends already on it.

Its such bull **** that this car was designed so that the small repairs such as brake lines/gas lines have to be the biggest PITA....and to do the job right.....major parts such as the Subframe have got to be removed.

DEATH TO FUJI HEAVY INDUSTRIES!

brake lines

Ooops. Just saw your post a little late for any help. Very possible I had the bumper off. Easy to remove if you have'nt allready done it. Did you remove the brackets for the sway bar.
Hmmm.. did I have the rear passenger side hub and axle off also.

I got both rear lines on. I ended up bending a line from Advanced Auto for the passenger's side. Then the lines under the rear seat were leaking. So, I spliced into both of them from inside the car....and ran about a foot of new line to the junction block.
