HC test man... Quick way to find out...

Here is what my headgasket looked like... You can see where the hot exhaust gas was getting into the water jacket... Just enough seal to keep out the water from the cylinder, but not enough to keep the pressurized exhaust from getting into the water jacket... Bad mojo.

I was just going to say the picture is upside down and the gasket is burnt because of the lack of coolant in the top part, but no, the gasket is not upside down...
No idea what could have caused the failure - other than hitting ground with exhaust manifold...

Question

Now i've decided to do the head gaskets, i priced up a Head gasket set, Head bolts, & a cambelt - Subaru £515 or Local parts place £320!

Would u recomend i get any of the parts from Subaru, or will the non genuine parts be ok? How fussy are these engines?

If i'm going 2 pull the engine i dont want 2 be doing it twice!!!!!

& does anyone know of anywhere cheap 2 get these parts in the UK? I thought the parts place was pretty good, & never had a problem with their parts yet!

Phil. :S

my car also has a case of the

leaky head gaskets
not sure what side, but Im going to do both in the next week or so...
Mine would over heat after driving on the freeway for 20-30 minutes and then exit to intown driving.

Exclamation Careful

My theory is the gaskets weaken allowing high-pressure combustion gasses to blow past in to the water jackets.

I checked my heads and block for flatness and they were fine. New gaskets and off I went.

Cutting heads on this engine could result in changed timing, ill-fitting intake manifold.....

It may not be needed.

Smile

Got the heads skimmed today, 1 head was slightly warped, but only needed a 6 thou skim, so not that bad!

I'm actually glad they found something wrong with it, at least i haven't pulled the engine for nothing! LOL

Update: Heads are back on, ( complicated torquing sequence!), Cams are in ( one thread on a cam retainers stripped, but managed to rethread it a bit deeper! Phew!), Cambelt is on too!

Rocker covers, etc tomorrow!

Phil.
