I love the ej22, one of my favorite engines, but some years this engine were a interferance engine. This has been debated for years on the ultimate subaru message board, and recently a mechanic came on and said he tore down a couple ej22s that broke there timing belt and said there was alot of damage that occured.

All subie engines (except the new 2.5 and 2.0 dual cam motors) are non-interferance.
The 3.3 is classified as an interferance engine, due to the fact that if one of the cam GEARS (the gears between the top and bottom cams) were to break off some teeth, the intake and exhaust valves could collide causing damage.

But a broke T-Belt WILL NOT cause any internal damage, but can cause lots of external damage(water pump pulley, all the idler pulleys for the T-belt, even the seals in the front of the motor.

So I recommend replaceing it before it breaks, but if it breaks, it won't be that bad, unless it was something internal to start with.

My 2 Cents

But im not going to get into that story it just makes me want to do some very drastic, very bad things so im going to stop....
Is it possible the T-belt broke, jamed up the CAM sprockets and then the CAM gears broke? This could lead to valve damage as Huck says.

The cam gears are inside the heads, and the belt is outside the heads, so that shouldn't be an issue.
If the cam gears break.....it would have nothing to do with the t-belt.

Yes Huck I agree with you. I was just trying to come up with a way for that dealer to be correct. Do you think its possible the cam shaft bearings went? Maybe the belt got wraped up around one of the cam sprockets?

I don't see any way the t-belt could do anything to the internal parts....but stranger things have happened
