Spoiler Paint Problems
Hey, I dunno if anyone else has had this problem but it seems that for every 2 chips I get in the paint on the hood of my car, I get one chip on the front edge of my spoiler... Anyone else having this issue and/or found a fix?
Mebbe a sunroof deflector would help solve this... cheers. t. |

This seems to be a very common thing. I don't know why and what we hit. The paint seems to be more brittle, and the shape of the spoiler seems to make it a problem. I have not had any experience with the sun roof deflector, but many have them. Maybe someone who has will jump in here.

I read somewhere, probably on this site, that the spoilers were not painted and installed by the factory but were dealer painted and installed and that is why the paint quality may not be as good. I also find that fiberglass chips really well!

I think that it is the fiberglass problem most of all.

The spoiler on my my mom's SVX had some paint problems and a body shop guy said it was delaminating. I didn't see the problem, but he had the car for quite some time. She actually picked it up from the shop on the way to the 10th anniversary meet.
Mine chips a little, but it's not bad. Don't open or close the trunk by the spoiler, that's my advice.

The spoilers were painted and installed, in most cases, by Subaru of America. Some spoilers were painted and installed by local dealers, also. None were installed at the factory.

Spoiler paint chips
My guess is that it's caused by the airflow over the top of the car-stones, etc. carry over the roof and flow to the leading edge of the spoiler. I base this on my experience coming home from the 10th anniv. show...I hit several heavy rain/hail storms during the trip, and when I got home, found the leading edge of the spoiler heavily paint-chipped. Only other damage was shattered plexi cover on front plate. There was no damage to hood...maybe because I put a strip of white tape across its leading edge long before that trip. to prevent stone damage.
Anyway, my spoiler fix to date was to lay a strip of black tape along the leading edge, which covers all the chips and (so far) has prevented any additional chipping. |

My guess is that the moonroof shield will not solve your problem. Might enhance it do to the low pressure zone you will create with it. Might pull rocks even higher up your trunk, But then again I'm an artist not an engineer:so.....I do know paint.
If it is the case that the thing is not painted correctly you have 3 options... 1. go to your local suby dealer or even better find a professional auto paint supplier(not auto parts store, but the place professional auto painters get there paint), and get a touch up paint can.ya know the little fingernail paint lookin thing. Touch up all your little dings. you'll get good at it quick. 2. repaint the entire thing(best idea),this is a real fix. Primer/Base coat/clearcoat(urithane paint) 3. Take it off. It is a problem most likely because the engineers did not design it to be there. |

Take it off?!?! Never!!
Guess it's just one of those necessary evils... mebbe I'll put some spray on bed liner on the leading edge of it after I get the car painted... |

Maybe the guy with the bondo car was onto something with his custom spoiler bra?
