Shift lock problem
Can anyone help on this please?
I am getting a problem with the shift lock not releasing when the brake pedal is pressed. It seems to work fine once you have got it out of Park in the first place. Then, when the engine is switched off and started again, same problem! When checking it after releasing the first time, the solenoids in the dash can be heard clicking merrily away. But not after the car has stood for a while. Taking me longer each time to make it work, usually by moving the lever to and fro and swearing a lot! Thanks in anticipation

So the solenoid is not releasing after the car has sat for a while? Maybe the solenoid has become defective and is sticking. Do you have the park release button by the shifter?

Just had a look at the shift lock mechanism. I see what you mean by the button! I have only ever used the footbrake to release the lock. Just using the push button seems to work. Checked the brake activated connectors and they were a bit loose, so have tightened them up. I'll find out tomorrow if it works!

A lot of times I'll find the solenoid has gunk built up on it, probably spilled Coke, old grease and dust, etc.

Seems to be behaving itself now. Will get the solenoid out over the summer and give it a clean as well.

Hi Tony
You have probably solved the problem. Another area to look at when you check it out fully is the ignition wiring. This is also connected to it. It is fairly common for the wiring there to come loose [the whole tumbler barrel gets loose with use!] and with a bad or erratic connection, the relays don't trigger. Tighten up there when you are at it. You will have to take the plastic shroud off the steering column. Joe
