Tire / AWD Question

During a routine oil change, my mechanic noticed that my front tires were worn down to the cords on the inside portion of each tire. The rest of the tread across the tire appears fine. The fronts must have too much negative camber. The tires in the rear are fine. All 4 tires are stock size and made by Ventus. If I cannot find Ventus tires then I'm stuck buying 4 new tires...right? It occurred to me that mixing fronts and rears of the same size but different manufacturers is a no-no in AWD. Is that right?

You're looking for tires that start out the same size and wear at the same rate. Tires from the same manufacturer are more likely to have those characteristics than tires from different manufacturers.

I don't know the consequences of having a slight difference front to rear, but someone here probably does.

Good luck!

I think that you are SOL. The spec is for all tires to be no more than 1/4" different in circumference. Unless your tires are almost brand new, you will either have to get 4 new tires and have your wheels aligned, or look into getting 2 new tires shaved down.

Yes, that is right. It is very important to have the same tread, and the same size tire. Even amounts of wear (new vs almost worn out) can be a problem. They should be the same tire with the same amount of wear. Maybe someone else will shed some light on this topic.

This might be a good time to point out how crucial it is to rotate the tires regularly on the SVX. Even wear = longer life for your running gear and your tires.

Original set of RE95's went 70K.
Current set of RE910's are near that, and appear to have quite a bit of life left.
No tranny problems either.

Thanks for all the responses. Yes, Ventus are made by Hankook. The risk there is by purchasing just two they may be slightly different (new version let's say). Mattski had it right. 4 new tires and a front end alignment. Yokohama Avid V4's from the Tire Rack all around are arriving today.
When you look at the tire wear on the front it is quite alarming looking at the wear. The fronts must have severe negative camber to wear that bad plus the steering has become quite darty which would make sense. Anybody else have excessive inner tire wear problems?

The car drives MUCH better when that happens.

I was surprised when I replaced my first set that they had exposed cords on the inside of the fronts, like yours. I think it must have happened pretty quickly, since I rotated every 15 ~ 20K. An alignment took care of the problem. My current tires have very even wear, but I got another alignment last month anyway.

I'm taking mine in Thursday for an alignment because of that very thing.
