Purrr????

i was driving from my friends house this morning...after letting my car warm up. i noticed that on the passeger side wheel well area that there is a purrring going on...anyone know what that could be? it only happens when i take my foot off the gas and let the car coast. it doesn't happen when i apply brakes, even though i have some squealing from brake dust...i don't know what it could possibly be....

You got a cat in there? Could be a torn boot just starting to act up. Take a look at the 1/2 shaft and make sure your boots aren't cracked. You'll have to crawl under a little to see but if you catch it early enough you may be able to jus t get a new boot. My guess is that unless its quite loud the noise is there regardless of braking or when you got your foot on the gas. Its just drowned out by the noise.

Naaa...

I'm betting it is a cat... Just get a dog out there and let it sniff around the car... That Purring will be gone in no time!!!

I'll bet there's something going on with the right side cat. Mebbe a small leak somewhere or the heat shield.

well, i know of two leaks, a small power steering leak and a small oil leak...i don't know if either one of them can cause a problem like that...my mechanic is taking me out on a quick ride on monday around two, so hopefully the problem can be easily fixed. there is a boot missing on the steering column, my b/f spotted that one, could that be causing the problem?

Kelli

i just hope the car doesn't poop out on me this weekend, i got a lot of stuff to do

i have figured out what exactly the purrs sounds like...if any of you guys have girls...or know a girl that had one of those little kittys that purred when you moved them around...that mechanically purring sound...that was made by a little thingy that moved around it's insides...anyone know what i am talking about?? well that is the exact noise...go to a toy store...they are still around, pick one up and listen to the noise it makes...kinda makes you wanna throw it into a wall, but it is cute!

after taking my b/f for a ride in it, his first thought was rotors...i was like "no...they go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" so when we got back to his house he started pushing down on the bad side...and there was a rubbing noise...but no sound on my good side....is that a strut or a shock? or is it something else?

suspension noise will only be noticable if you are turning or going over bumps..oil or p/s leak shouldnt be anything unless your p/s fluid is just a little low..this will make bubbles get in the fluid and the pump will make a purrr. Front wheel bearing could be a problem. also the front axels. good luck...

I've known several gals that had kitty's that purred when I moved them around but that is a subject for an entirely different kind of forum.

That said, I do have a couple thoughts on your current purring problem. Is there any pulsing at all when you apply the brakes? It is possible that the right front rotor is warped just enough to cause the caliper or pads to rattle back and forth just enough to cause a purring sound but would stop when the brakes are applied. Also, does the sound stop only when braking and not accelerating? It seems to me that if it were a CV issue the sound might stop when under any load, either braking or accelerating, and occur when running "neutral" (so to speak). The fact that it only stops when braking leads me to believe the problem lies more in the rotors/calipers than anywhere else. At least that is where I would focus my attention initially.

Good luck with it. That stuff can get really annoying if not fixed.
