Harmonic Balancer Going Bad?

My harmonic balancer seems to be making a squeeking noise and it is wobbling around slightly. Is this a sign of it going bad?

I know there are some aftermarket options, what does everyone recommend for replacment?

Thanks,

Mike

It may works its way into the timing belt cover.

Well, I am not driving the car... it is away for the winter, so that isnt a concern. I just noticed it when i fired it up to move it on Friday.

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX
Replace it with a standard Subaru Harmonic balancer.
Don't use a strap around the outside of the pulley to undo it, as it can break the rubber bonding loose.

Harvey.

I Have been using a strap wrench on the pulley for some time now. I see your point. If you use the Suby tool it just grabs the rigid hub section. Do you own that special tool? Does the one for the Legacy fit the SVX?

I made a tool for my Legacy out of a 3/4" plank of wood, with two bolts which go into the hub, and a handle for leverage. The bolts were threaded through slightly smaller holes to keep things tight because I could not use nuts to steady things because they interfered with the hub. Although one could recess the nuts into the plank to overcome that. I then drilled a hole for the nut socket.

A friend used a socket and breaker bar on the crank nut, and then rolled the car while bracing the bar against the fender to loosen it.

Hi Matt,

Did you thread the bolts into the holes in the pulley? The Suby tool uses pins so I guess there are also non-threaded holes on a smaller pitch diameter.

John, no I did not thread the bolts into the pulley. I was lucky to find two bolts of the exact diameter and length in my stash of bolts. I then drilled two holes in the wood plank slightly smaller than the bolts so they threaded in and remained snug without the need for a nut on the other side of the plank.

If you want, you can borrow my tool.

Matt
