No answer?
Just make sure it's not Type-F (Ford) or ATF+3 (Chrysler) and it should be safe

I have always just used the Subaru brand transmission/power steering fluid everytime I changed my fluid and I have never had a problem with it. Slight downside is that it cost a little more than ATF you could pick up at Autozone, Schucks, etc. I know that some people prefer synthetic fluid and it supposidly helps keep tranny temps down too. Also remember to change your internal and external transmissions filters when you change your fluid. I believe the transmission holds around 12 quarts I can't remember the exact amount.

When you change the internal filter, you will drain out quite a bit more than if you just drain using the plug.

Amsoil Synthetic ATF
Want your tranny to last long, go with the Amsoil Universal Synthetic ATF. Its well worth the investment. I had over 300k miles on my legacy awd wagon when I sold it, and it still shifted like new. If you sign up to be a preferred customer, you pay $20 a year and get wholesale prices. I use a lot of there products so the savings are substantial.
