tie rod ....dead

hi , i am suspecting that my passenger tie rod is broken.

when i am crusing around 100-110 km\h my steering wheel heavily shakes . i kicked my tire sideway to see if there is a loose ,unfortunetly it wasn't stiff. i am wondering if it is do-able or should i pay someone to do it , i have many tools but i don't want to be stuck if i fail.

since i will have to remove the wheel and get there is there anything else i should check ?for sure i will have to bring the car to the garage for an alignement after fixing this.

i read the manual-cd with nothing that could help and the search option the the forums don't take "TIE ROD" so i am asking you . please

thanks for hints.

Re: tie rod ....dead

Are you sure it's the tie rod? When I had a wheel bearing go bad, I know that my wheel wasn't very stiff at all when I kicked it.

Re: tie rod ....dead

since it is only moving horizontally , i 'd say it is a tie rod. but i do hear a kinda wwwooooooooooommmppppppp noise when i am rolling. you may be right , is there a good way finding what is the problem ?

edit : i know that my car keep pulling me to the right too, but this may be an alignement.

Re: tie rod ....dead

damn, i've changed my balljoint , it helped but i notice that it is still loose in the steering rack and i am seriously thinking it is the inner tierod, conductor side, is there any tricks to remove this safely and easily ?

Re: tie rod ....dead

With all due respect, for safety's sake you should immediately take the car to a pro for a proper diagnosis, rather than guessing.

Re: tie rod ....dead

Without an inner tie rod end tool it is quite difficult to change them, you might want to look into renting one (if you even can...not sure). Don't forget to replace the boots and locktite the threads.

Re: tie rod ....dead

thank you for explaining me about rack and pinion , i have seen the part list http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/How-To/28216.jpg and i guess it would be part 7 ? , or when something like this occur, if i still drove it, 3.6.7 would need to be changed ?

EDIT:

i have d it. i understand a little more about the tool you were talking about... like u said , that kind of job look alot harder without proper tools, sucks i can't do it by myself , if i want to wait a few weeks i could do it at my uncle's garage, he probably has a "tie rod remover",i ' ll see what i can do, i guess since i'm in it ,i guess it is better to change them both, i hope i will only need to change part 7 .
