Strange smell from my rear end

I was backing up my car last night and had the window opened. I happened to catch the smell when the window blew the odor back towards me and it smelled rather foul. It smelled like burnt gas, if i had to describe it.

I havent caught a whiff of that until now, but could that be because I have AR20 resonators instead of the precats, then going into a single magnaflow exhaust? Or is my engine not burning correctly. It seems to be running fine, and can still get up and go when needed. Gas mileage is still the same also.

Re: Strange smell from my rear end

Thread title is funny for childish reasons. I'd say it has a lot to do with your exhaust setup. I'm guessing you're running catless as well?

Re: Strange smell from my rear end

My setup consists of:

Two Aero Turbine AR20 resonators after the headers collecting into a Magnaflow 2 to 1 high flow cat.

Then it goes out to a magnaflow resonator to a magnaflow muffler.

I've had similar setups on previous cars. Probably more like condensation. I wouldn't pay much attention to it. It was probably like this all winter, and now that it's getting warm enough to open windows, you'll start hearing all sorts of new sounds and smelling new smells.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it really is a pungent odor, then I'd blame your cat.

Seeing as the rest of you couldn't resist digging at the title, so I will resist.

Tim, it's likely the smell you are getting is Hydrogen Sulphide, but it could be ammonia.

Production of H2S is related to the amount of Sulphur [Sulfur in American, I expect ] in your fuel. With 3-way catalysts Sulphur can be "collected" on the catalyst matrix, and in the right conditions given off as Hydrogen Sulphide, a smelly and toxic gas.

The right conditions for production of Hydrogen Sulphide would be:
  1. Very high catalyst temperature
  2. Low volume of gas through the pipe over the catalyst
  3. Rich fuel mixture
All three of the above would pertain if you slowed to a stop on the highway after a long fast run. There would be more of the smelly gas produced on tickover in this situation.

Reversing your car into or out of the garage could also produce the gas under two of the above conditions, and it would be passing your window.

I don't think this gas is anything to worry about, unless you want to check if your engine is running too rich. Knowing your engine is producing the gas it would perhaps be wise not to run the engine in a closed space any more than you have to.

Joe

PS cheaper gasoline often contains higher amounts of sulphur, so treat your SVX to the "good stuff"

You can try blaming the cat but the exhaust note will always give you away!
