Re: Background - roadworthy issues.
Thanks Keith. Didn't seem reasonable to me, but I know my knowledge is limited. Its not like the hole is hidden either - its about 2/3 of the way down, facing the main engine bay, not the wall.
Tania.

Re: Replacement of leaking power steering pump, pressure hose and rack
There is a loose sleeve over the hose, is that what your talking about? I think it on there to prevent abrasion from wires crossing it??? Not really sure, but it's not meant to hold pressure.

Careful the offroad racer doesn't try to steal it off you, they only love our cars for their engine My car had the power steer hose repaired by enzed ages ago.

Enzed will be doing my hose, too - there's only two places that do them here and apparently they're who CV guy prefers. Tania.

Update:
The original mechanic says he'll do the labour, I pay for parts. I think it still gets sent out to CV/steering guy to do. That bit I like, since he's a specialist.
The bit I don't like is that labour was only a bit over 20% of the original quote. Oh, and the price quoted for the hose will be the same - these Enzed dudes manufacture fittings if needed, as well. Got a quote directly from them today and it was the same. Still chasing up SVX rebuild man - he was out of town today - to see if he has a rack in good condition. I think the mechanic is being fair - he didn't make the parts wear out. At the same time its gonna hurt and I'd have offered a bit less for the car if I knew there was major work to be done. Oh well, still think she's gorgeous and adore her. Tania. p.s. I'm not sure, but she might be undergoing a sex change and morphing into a male.

An update to close this one off
wow! so this is how she's meant to steer. More like what I expected and she's much more responsive/solid on turns.
Rack & pressure hose done, only the pump to go. (was decided the pump was my responsibility since it wasn't a roadworthy issue - now I'm trying to understand the difference between servicing and rebuilding the pump) I picked her up on Friday, then drove home in a cloud of smoke, which was rather disturbing. Kinda felt sorry for the mechanic - the guys that did the pressure hose didn't tighten a fitting properly, so when he put it back on and started it up, the hose gave way... He did wash it down, but man that stuff stinks when it burns off. Now I've just got to try and track down the wheel centre cap she came back without. Thanks again for all your help, everyone. Tania.

Re: Replacement of leaking power steering pump, pressure hose and rack
You could go with this. I think that's what I'm gonna do for mine. Realln need to clean up the engine bay and it's hard to do with all that damn fluid eating away at the paint and everything.
