If gas prices weren't so ridiculous, I'd say go for a 4.44 swap. A friend once had an SVX, and that's how his diff went.

if it were me, since I have no idea what your skill level or work area is like) I would get a used tranny to put in. I couldn't do that as quickly as Hocrest could or young Tom there, but It can be done by a semi-mechanically inclined person rather easily.

consider it this way
you got a burnt front diff
and a binding center diff.

a front diff swap won't fix it..

see what your shop would charge for that.
I bet it's less than a rebuild

Kinda sobering to think that a front differential could just up and seize tight. That could be unhealthy at speed. Front wheels that aren't turning, aren't steering. One would hope the thing would just come unglued and leave the wheels free to turn.

Re: Help Urgent My SVX stopped on its own. F Wh Locked.

Thanks for the reply. How much would a used tranny cost now a days? Where could I get them?

Based on what are posted, it doesn't seem like changing the tranny is going to gaurantee to remove the binding... I once brought my car in a tranny shop and asked to check the solenoid C and they said its fine. FWD fuse does remove the binding for my car. To me keeping my car FWD is not a problem, particularly considering subaruparts.com lists price of rear dufferential (=transfer case right?) is like 1500$+...

if the FWD fuse fixes the binding... it is the Sol. C

Tom, I'm a bit confused.
I saw in this thread http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...binding&page=2
People commented like,

"Soleniod C disengages the transfer clutch. The FWD fuse engages soleniod C. Failure mode is full transfer."
If is this true? If so, wouldn't the FWD fuse working means Sol. C is o.k.?

So the mechanic called me and he also agrees Front Differential being the culprit. He says he will charge 650$ for labor and will use parts that I will provide. Odd thing was he was using term transfer case and he said a dealer he called told him that the parts will be 1500$! I'm guessing they were confused with rear differential… But I will make sure we are in same page... The wheels locked were definitely front side and rear wheels were free.

I will have to persuade my wife with this to save my SVX. But the mechanic will be dropping the tranny, so I would like to get recommendations on what I might want to have mechanic do while he is down there. Will changing the sol. C most likely fix binding in my case?

By the way, I have installed 2 tranny coolers, ATF external filter and T gauge as soon as I got my SVX (at 70Kmiles, now I have 120K miles), and have noticed no problem in shifting, since then. I usually can't notice tranny shifting except may be from 2nd to 3rd.

Re: Help Urgent My SVX stopped on its own. F Wh Locked.

The Sol. C disengages the transfer clutches... It usually receives a waveform to activate its duty cycle. If the solenoid is on its way out the signal is too weak to actually make it do anything. Thats why the constant power from the FWD fuse creates a constant power supply to keep the solenoid from allowing the clutches to grab. So in short, yes a new solenoid should fix the issue.

Now the prices for new parts from Subaru are extremely expensive... so used is usually the best route

Yea, I just talked to the mechanic and he is changing mind. He wants to get parts from a dealer in town and want 20% profit on the part price, so he's now asking 1500$, On the phone, he clearly said he will just charge labor for 650$ and use my parts... To go with a used parts, I will have to either give him some addition for his "profit" or tow the car to some other place....

Any way, I'm wondering whether I can get only used front differential , not the whole transmission. Can some one let me know a good site for getting used parts?
Thanks!
