I picked it up yesterday and to my suprise the motor ran without a peep. Mabey a sticky lifter? It is a 1996 Outback with a 2.2 and a 5 speed so if the motor does crap out I have everything I need for a swap! It does have some rust in the same spots that svxii rust at but I can live with that. On the mile and a half ride home I only noticed 2 problems: There is a click sound coming from door every 30 seconds or so. PO said it was because I used the Auto down window switch. Problem #2 is a lot of side to side play in the shifter and the clutch lets out a little high for my taste. Other than that it rode like a dream.

Does anyone know of a good forum to join for the 1st generation legacy outback? I checked out subaruoutback.org but it seems to be geared towards newer models. I don't even know where to start looking.

The new generation forums at USMB are good, USMB is where I got my start with Subaru forums. They talk about all Subaru's from 360's and 70's era cars to 2008's.

I also spend time at SLI they deal mostly with Legacy's/OB's from 95-2004.

If you want me to take a look/listen next weekend, let me know.

yeah, don't over heat it, and keep oil in it, and that engine will not go down

Well I got the title transfered today, drove around and cleaned it up today. So far the motor seems fine aside from an oil leak. There seems to be a dirty door lock switch as only the driver door will lock and unlock with the remote. I think the rear struts may be worn because there is an audible clunk over bumps. There is also a ton of slop in the shifter (side to side) and the clutch engages a little high. Dave if you are going to be in the neighborhood tomorrow? I could use a little legacy skoolin'. I'm trying to figure out how to adjust the clutch with little luck. I'll try to get some pics on monday, I don't have a card reader for my busted camera.

I fixed the door locks this morning. The wipers in the door lock switch were dirty. Also got the clutch adjusted, now I have to attack the shifter linkage. BTW I found some shared parts with the SVX: Hood latch, Door latches, Oil cap, Brake fluid cap, not 100% certain but airbox is similar, windshield wiper arms & fuel filter.

We got to see the wagon last night, you definitely got a great deal EVEN if you would have paid for it...

The engine sounded better than my Legacy

Good luck with it...

Re: Free '96 legacy wagon

Thanks Tom, I kinda miss my rabbit tho. Especially at the gas pump, I went from $16.00 every 2 weeks to $50.00. I'm sure the feeling will fade in the winter when I don't have an inch of ice on the floor.
