Thanks to both of you for your help. The codes from the OBD-II scanner lead me to the same conclusion - that the engine coolant temp sensor is to blame for the hard starting and the MIL.

I didn't understand the second code (see above, P0125) until somebody reminded me what 'closed-loop' operation was.

If Liberty Subaru is taking parts orders today, I'll order the sensor.

Thanks for your time, guys. I really appreciate the VIN lookup and the experienced help.

Edit: I just have one more question:

Where the hell is the coolant temp sensor???

temp sensor

The coolant temp sensor tells the ECU how hot/cold the coolant is (which indirectly is the temp of the engine itself). The ECU uses this info for fuel delivery: more when cold, less when hot. It is located on the coolant pipe that connects the two sides of the engine block together and is next to the temp gauge sensor (which sends temp info to the gauge on your dash).

Where is that pipe, though? Is it the one on top of the engine, under the intake manifold?

That's where it is on the SVX. It's accessable from the driver's side. There's 2 sensors...one for the gauge and one for the ECU. It's the one for the ECU (should be the less expensive one) that needs to be changed.

sensor location

Yes, the sensor is below the intake manifold, near the PCV system, towards the back. There are two sensors on that pipe...you want the one on the right with the two wire plug (the sensor with the one wire plug is the gauge sensor).

Oh ya, a word of advice, change it when it's cold.
