That sudden surge....

Sometimes I would swear that the car has almost 1000hp.

Sure, it's possible, but it wouldn't account for your extra 37hp. Make no mistake about this - adding fuel alone does not make more power. You have to add air, which is why we turbocharge and supercharge cars.

On every model-year SVX, Power mode changes the shift map only.
Yes Nick I agree with you and that is why it does not make sense. Except for those times when when it seems really faster. Maybe its got something to do with that cross connecting induction valve for more air. Maybe the the idle air valve opens fully? Maybe it's got something do with the engine normally not having enough air? I am just saying I think it's there but it isn't repeatable right after it happens. All of this stuff could be controled by the ECU.

How about some more opinions from 92 owners?

I have noticed that it is quite a difference when i hit it and it goes in power mode...there is more then just a change in redline cause when in first and you floor it and slowly takes off yet floor it fast to engage the power mode and she flies off....interesting ideas...

It would feel like the SVX has a lot more power if you punch it at 29mph as opposed to 31mph. I wish city limits were either 30mph or 45mph. Ours are 60kph/37mph and the SVX is just not impressive at that speed at all.

Mine is alot faster when no-one else is with me to witness it.

Seriously I too have experienced the "WOW that was fast" vs. "WOW that was fast.....last time I tried it"

I wish I knew what the triggers were. One morning at approx 45 to 50 MPH I needed to pass a slower vehicle and quickly. I got a running start and then PUNCH!. Woah pony!!!!!! Had trouble keeping it straight and never did see the car as I passed it. I looked down and in what seemed like seconds was at 80 MPH. This has only happened a couple of times. Boy is it fun when it does!!

an old trick for 928's (which came mostly automatic, to the U.S. anyway) was to put in a parallel kickdown switch. i put a momentary switch on my deadpedal in parallel with the kickdown switch under the gas pedal. i could hold it down with the left foot if i anticipated a "takeoff." it would kinda trick the computer into inducing kickdown more readily, but other factors were involved (speed at which you hit the gas pedal, current speed, etc.) i'm sure there would be a way to do something like this on the SVX to make Power Mode happen more often. didn't some foreign SVX's have a Power Mode button where the USDM Manual button is on the shifter? i don't have shop manuals, so i can't really investigate it too much. i asked about this before, but didn't get very far.

Yes. I believe the European spec SVXes had the powermode button and manual switch. Manual switch is on the array of buttons and powerswith is where our (US Specs) manual switch is located.

My '92 hits the power mode just fine everytime. (Vibrates at high RPM though)

The trouble is how fast it accelerates seems inconsistant, not when it shifts.

Just wondering. Does the first wow possibly occur before TC lock-up, then, of course after you've punched it, the tranny fluid has warmed, and possibly the TC has locked up and it doesn't "seem" as fast? Again, just wondering.

I think the ZOOM is controled by the inductor valve between the two halves of the intake manifold. Sometimes it does its thing and other times it doesn't.

There is a write up on this in the SM that explains this valve but I have not found the section that talks about how to trouble shoot it.
I think it would fairly easy to hook up a volt meter to the ECU pin that works this. Then it would be easy to tell when it comes on. It would be the major factor for increasing the HP along with some extra GAS cause it puts more air in the engine.

Does a pedal mash induce power mode for you guys? I never could seem to get the light to come on when i mash the gas, but it does downshift and go up to like 5000 rpm.

The only way I could seem to get the power light to come on is by tapping the gas twice and holding the gas down on the second tap.

Anyone experience the same thing?

Randy i,

It's an interesting thought. In normal city driving it makes sense. At highway speeds although, I would suspect that once it downshifts the TC lock wouldn't be a factor any longer would it?
