Any time someone "converts" an all wheel drive to front wheel drive I cringe.
The reason is it puts more stress onto the front differential.
Under "normal" driving conditions about 66% of the torque goes to the front differential and 34% goes to the rear.
With the FWD fuse installed 100% goes to the front!
That MIGHT not seem like much,
but consider this;
If you are using all 230HP, in AWD 151.8 HP goes to the front,
in FWD 230HP goes to the front diff, THAT is a 51.51% increase in torque.
Our transmissions are designed to operate at 50/50% under high loads to distribute/share the loads.
So under high load you are causing double the torque to all of the front (only) load bearing surfaces.

Also during wheelspin with the fuse in F/R clutch discs spin at dissimilar speeds, causing some clutch wear.
With the front and rear wheels turning at different speeds any weak internal componant can fail.

During this time I had really bald tires up front, plus it was raining a lot so the tires where constantly spinning off the lights.
And you want to know why it failed.
As Tom says.

Re: possible dead front diff

I didn't convert it to fwd. I had to go to WORK and had no other transportation. The tranny was a 4.11 awd, my tires where bald because I didn't have the MONEY to buy new ones. I had no other choice but to do what I did, but yet I get criticized for it. All I asked was a few simple questions. My tires have literally NO TREAD left on them so It's very hard to keep the car from spinning the tires.

I hope that you are not referring to me.?!

I did not criticize at all,
I just answered your question.
Putting in the fuse in IS converting it to FWD.

No, that was intended for the sarcastic guy. I'm just pissed that this happened but I'm ok now that I managed to rape my wallet for my last $240 to get a new tranny.

Sorry that you took it that way. I just found it strange that you were asking why it happened, while stating all the reasons that caused it to happen.

Sorry Harvey.

New Subaru list price $447.24
Subaruparts.com $397.60 plus shipping.
New aftermarket from Advance Auto Parts, about $70.00, BUT make sure that the wheel side hub diameter is the correct size!

Re: possible dead front diff

Holy sh*t ! $70 sounds much more reasonable. Also what cars came with which transmissions, my memory is a little fuzzy. The legacy's that are in the junkyard are a 93 L, 91 L, and a 99 legacy outback.

Re: possible dead front diff

Help porfavor. I know I did the swap already and this is a stupid question to ask, but all the trannies are older than mine or newer so I'm not sure if they will work.

Well you took one step back, and there I was.

It’s not the first time someone has taken my comments to be sarcastic. I think it is not just a language difference, I think it is a culture difference, Australians have a good/weird/warped, sense of humour, and joke about anything, themselves included.

I guess that Americans see some of that, as sarcasm.

Harvey.

I'm sorry about the rude remark I made. I was very aggravated.
