When I say no difference whatsoever I mean I could not tell the difference between before and after I disconnected it. The problem was still there between 1st and 2nd but the shifts did not feel any harder.

OK If you disconnected the resistor and the shifts did not become a lot harder, it would look like the box can't produce full line pressure. You could check the oil pick-up screen in the pan, it could be blocked.

Refer post #20 --- Verify by properly testing the line pressure, by using a gauge connected to the port provided for this purpose. Any reliable transmission shop should be able to carry out this standard test. Incidentally I have one permanently connected and mounted on the dash, so that I can constantly monitor line pressure.

First things first and which do not require removal of the transmission:-

Blocked external cooler or filter. Blocked main strainer. Solenoid "A" valve fault.

Blocked internal strainer/filter associated with the pilot valve. This calls for removal and separation of the valve body.
