Re: A few questions about my new SVX...

My 2 12's fit nice and neat in the truck in my enclosure. Not sure why you would have a problem with it. Its the standard trapezoid shape.

Agreed lol, my first 3 sub enclosures were made by jigsaw from 3/4 medium density fiberboard..... and it takes simple math to design a box with the 2 1/2 cubic feet of airspace for that 12 of yours. You will be that much more satisfied when you build it trust me.

Re: A few questions about my new SVX...

Its a single sub rectangular cube vented box. I haven't tried to squeeze it in, but it fit pretty tight in my Legacy, and made it impossible to access the spare without taking it out first. Maybe I should just look for a smaller box.

I think you will have to remove it regardless of shape or size to get the spare out.

Re: A few questions about my new SVX...

That's why I'd like to do a custom corner mounted one like the ones on this site. Can't quite afford that at the moment though, so I'll just cross my fingers that mine will fit. I don't have a head unit to plug it into yet anyway. Just the stock stereo/CD unit.

Well any enclosure would get in the way of lifting the plywood up I believe.

Re: A few questions about my new SVX...

This is the one I was referring to. It sits away from everything and still allows the spare tire to be accessed. Only problems are that it only fits a 10" speaker, and as was mentioned earlier in this thread its $700

Re: A few questions about my new SVX...

You could just get some Infinity Kappa 6x9s and put them in the rear deck with an amp, use the trunk as the speaker box, plenty of boom boom boom and you don't lose your trunk space.

Re: A few questions about my new SVX...

Subaru sells a boom box with 120 watt amplifier for about $200.

It might be worth a listen if you knew anybody who used one?

Re: A few questions about my new SVX...

Okay, one more question. I'm not positive yet, but I'm starting to suspect that my rack and pinion might be going out. Steering seems somewhat loose and I've noticed I have a small amount of play in my steering wheel. Then there's the knocking/bumping noise I described above. So assuming this turns out to be the problem, how difficult is it to switch out a rack and pinion setup?

Possible ball joints.

Re: A few questions about my new SVX...

Ball joints may be suspect..... best way to find front-end problems is jack up both front wheels, shaking them hard and move them side to side. Steering linkage play will be evident, ball joints not so much..... they usually go at around 120K.

Re: A few questions about my new SVX...

Well here's to hoping its the ball joints then. That would be much easier and cheaper.

Thanks for all the help guys. This has to be one of the most useful forums I've ever come across.

Re: A few questions about my new SVX...

So I finally had a chance to lift the front end up and wiggle everything around. Nothing feels out of place. Ball joints seem solid, tie rod ends look like hell but they're not loose. There is a bit of play in the steering however, and it appears that I have a small leak somewhere in the steering system, most likely coming from the rack itself.

Finally got a couple pictures too. They're camera phone pics, but they give you the general idea at least.
