5spd check engine light: how to clear?

hey all

i have a 92 with a 2002 wrx 5spd. i love it. runs great. only thing is: there is a check engine light that will not go away. i am almost positive that it is because of the tranny. not really a problem....
HOWEVER
i live in CA and i need it to pass a smog test. a check engine light on = instant fail.

my question: can it be cleared? even if temporarily?
what do i need to do in order to get it to go away?
when i first got the car it didnt have the light (even with the 5spd)
it was only after 2 months of solid driving did the light mysteriously come on.

i was told by one mechanic that unplugging the battery for a while will reset it, but i have not tried this.

any suggestions? i just need to pass the test, then the light can stay on all day as far as im concerned!

THANKS SO MUCH!!!!
JJ

In the "How To documents" are instructions for reading the code. It's pretty simple and I'd do that first.

To clear it, there are instructions for clearing it also, or you can just disconnect the ground cable from the battery for 30 minutes.

None of the 3 5-speed SVX's I've built had a CEL issue, so it shouldn't be the 5-speed swap...unless you don't have the speedo hooked up...
