the Sounds of Reverse...

don't know what the problem could be

when i put the gear selector in reverse the car makes a squealing/whining/hard to describe noise and then you can feel the gears drop into reverse

its an obnoxious noise and it draws attention, any idea what might be causing this?

Re: the Sounds of Reverse...

im going to bump this thread because my car is still doing it

however, ive found that if i hold in the shift lock button (which i have to do any time i want to select a gear from park; I KNOW i shouldnt have to but just never really worried about it enough to fix it) and the button on the gear selector, the sound is either gone completely or much quieter

Re: the Sounds of Reverse...

Need to know if you think the noise is coming from the tranny or from behind you. Does it only make the sound when the car is still and in reverse or while moving?

Check for rusty reat rotors. They'd definitely cause the squealing in reverse.

Or the gear box or rear axle could cause this.

Re: the Sounds of Reverse...

well the squeal that i hear first comes from the transmission, or at least in front of me. the squeal is only about 1 second long, then i hear a loud knock which comes from the rear of the car.

i just replaced all the rotors so i think we can rule that out

the sound does not continue once the car is in reverse, just when it is first selected

Re: the Sounds of Reverse...

Your reverse is starting to go out most likely. Early stages of losing your reverse selection all together, if its just squealing and knocking when you first select it, sounds just like what happened in my Impreza my girlfriend had before the reverse gear went.. then it started not going into drive with the same squeal and you had to start the car with the gear selector in 2nd to go anywhere.

If you plan on keeping the car and want to save some bucks my ultimate suggestion is go to a tranny shop and have them check out your reverse gear and see if the transmission is salvageable. My 3 tranny dealers in my area in Minnesota offer free inspections/estimates with sure problems. I'm not sure about your area but its always worth looking into.
