Number of 'alive' SVXs

I was wondering in anyone had any reasonable estimate of how many SVXs there are out there, in the USA and a total world number. I have tried to take a look and am somewhere around 1000 in the USA, but it is not a very good estimate, because I have no idea for sure. The admins might have a much better idea at least of the US, mostly because of different sighting threads and attending some of the meets.

Far more than 1000. I would guess ten times that many.

Sorry, that's what I meant. 10,000.

If i remember right, I believe that I saw 14,000 were imported into the US over the 8 years they were sold.

Production numbers and imports/exports:

Worldwide production 25,000
US 14,257
Canada 942
Europe 2,478
Germany 854
Other 6,469

Right Hand Drive 7,000

I would guess that half of them are no longer on the road. If that were the case, cut all of the numbers in half.

yeah, its probobly safe to say that there are about 7k on the road nowadays. This is thanks to people wrecking them, and finding employment in parting them

My opinion - much higher number, closer to the projection of 10,000 in USA. Reasons: SVX is a low-theft vehicle, few were stripped and sold for parts. SVX was and remains a vehicle with a more fanatic ownership who tend to give their cars higher levels of maintenance. SVX is, overall, a well built car that resists normal effects of aging and high mileage. SVX is an accident avoidance type car, one that is capable of getting a driver out of trouble, and because of this, a smaller percentage of the total were involved in wrecks that "totalled" the car. Finally, the SVX is gaining popularity among a set of younger owners due to its rarity, style and performance, thus acting to preserve a greater percentage of older SVXs. No, I think the number in the USA may be much closer to 10K.

the only problem is... Parting out an SVX will net someone more money than selling it... So people on ebay will buy SVXi for dirt cheap that need things like transmissions or a bit of body work and part it out to make money. Many people are living off of this which I find truely disturbing. BUT this means that these cars will never see the road again. I believe it is safe to say that 1 SVX hits the chopping block every other week. So go ahead guys... buy your parts from these guys and support the destruction of many more easily repairable cars. Also, with people smashing them up into trees, explorers, guard rails, the ground(on the roof), WWII monuments, and various other hard objects. This detruction of SVXi also is a main contributor to the lacking #'s. I will stand behind the 7k # because of these above listed activities

Where are all the eg33 blocks?

I'm going with a 9k figure. There are thousands of non-internet using geezers cruising around and hoarding these things. The wreck and chop trend has only recently started, though the numbers being sold is worrying.

I would agree and be even be more pessimistic on the numbers. With the 92s hitting 16 years old, the attrition rate is going to begin growing much faster. Most are seeing their second and third owners, most of who don't have the financial resources their original owners had to keep the cars well-maintained. Just as a matter of observation, 5 years ago seeing an SVX on the road wasn't all that rare a sight - now it's very rare.

I don't think they really do. That would be a guess by them.

If we look at the figures I have locally, I have nearly 30 running SVXs acounted for for the Anchorage Mat-Su area, yet we only have 4 Anchoragites on the site.

That comes to around 13%. Let's assume I haven't seen every SVX in the area which is both possible and probable. Let's say 12% of Alaskan SVXers are enthusiasts.

Let's say this number stretches across the world.

12% of 25k is 3000, which is about 2x the current active SVXN member count. Safe to say given the ratio of non-owners to multi-owners they dole out 1:1.

6% of SVXi are accounted for here, being maintained in some form, 6% are sold or parted.
There are no wrecked SVXi in Alaska, so this number is biased, but 88% of SVXi are tooling around either being destroyed or owned by people who just own the car because they have it.
Again a personal observation, of Alaskan SVXs, 3 appear to be in disrepair or a state of decline. My car would be the fourth, if there were to be a fourth contestant for that category.
10% of SVXi are in decline or are destroyed.
16% should be the number to be considered off the road. That's like 2281 for the US.
Using these conservative Alaskan numbers, the sum of missing SVXi is very small. If we give a generous estimate of twice this amount, that comes to 4562.

14,257 - 4562 = 9695 on US roads
which just happens to coincide perfectly with the number I pulled randomly out of the air.

actually you can take a look at a sample group of vehicles still registered across the nation and make assumptions based on this sample group. thats how Toyota does it I am sure.

The part out trend has been going on for at least 5 years now and Mike Davis was one of the first to get the ball rolling...thanks a lot
