Tranny dead..then alive ??
Had noticed a whirring sound last couple of days.
On the way home Tues. night I started losing power-like my tranny was slipping. It got worse and then just lost all gears- like I was in neutral. No more whirring sound- no more tranny. After a lovley tow home yesterday morning I checked the tranny fluid and it was very low on the dipstick. I started it up and put it in gear and it moved forward and reverse in my driveway. I added some tranny fluid and headed out and it drove fine. Then after it warmed up I heard the whirring sound again. It starts when I step on the gas and sometimes lingers for a few seconds after I take my foot off. So I brought it to the Tanny place too have them check it out and am waiting too hear. They said if fluid was at least showing on the dipstick it wouldn't completeley shut down like that. Any guess on the problem? |

yeah, if you had flud on the stick it would not go dead on you. It sounds like your pump is on its way out. I had a BMW that did the same thing....once the pump was warm it wouldnt put out enough pressure to push the clutches tight. I put a new pump in it and it was fine for another year then I sold the car. Im not sure if it is still running but I wouldnt be suprissed. But alot of the time as the pump goes you burn up your clutches because of the slippping

Sorry to hear about such problem
The 4EAT transmission is a complicated unit. It is much that can happen, and very difficult to say what the problem is. The sound is a bad indication. Start to checking the oil. If it is black and smells burned it tells the condition of your transmission is not good. The next step, check the oil in the trans. not only the dip stick. Let some oil out or take down the oil pan and look for metall partickels in the oil. If there are there are some thing that brakes down. The oil tells much about the condition of the transmissin. I have had similar problem with my car but could not hear any sound. It seems to be the "one way clutch 3-4" At least to thing have to work in the transmission to bring the car foward: It is the foward clutch for all four speed and the one way clutch 3-4 on the first 3 speed.

Thanks guys. I picked it up last night. The tranny guy said
they drove it for 40 minutes and got it good and hot and did not have any trouble with it. Said the low tranny fluid could have caused the problem. If it were his car he would keep driving it as it is - so we will see what happens. |

Well Ho HO Ho it died on the way home last night again.
It happend in the exact same place! Whirring sound was back. After it died I shut it off and waited a couple minutes and started it again- and it went into gear and off I went- for about a half mile- then starts to slip again until it's like I'm in neutral. So I had to keep pulling over, shut the car off- sometimes just for a few seconds and when I started back up it would move fine for about half mile. I had to do this about 9 times to get home but at least I made it. Needless to say I have to get it to the shop but I just don't understand how I could have no tranny at all then shut the car off for a few seconds and start it again and it's back to life. Any further guesses?? Not a very merry xmas. |
