It Can Be Done! (Head Removal)
In my locker is a picture (it's the only one in there) of my now-headless '92 Pearl. You'll notice that the engine is STILL IN THE CAR. It took 10-12 hours of work at a leisurely pace to get the heads off, and after getting the the spark plugs/coil packs and valve covers off there was plenty of space on the sides to remove the cams (required) and finally unbolt the heads. Now the trick will be getting it all back together with new head gaskets to cure my overheating and oil in the coolant woes.headless engine

why were you so desperate to keep the motor in the car? I don't know if it would have taken less time, but I would have pulled (or dropped... never done an SVX motor) that thing before I tried that.
Nice work though. Just wondering, do you have the tools to take precise measurements?? like... thousandths of an inch? (or equiv)

Cool. Not much left of the engine in the car. :-) Were you able to see where the head gasket had failed?

Doesn't removing the engine involve disconnecting a lot more hoses, wires, and tranny? For a home mechanic on a budget, this may be a viable option. It sounds like one may even be able to accomplish the gasket change over a weekend.

Removal?
Actually from where you are with the engine that is not that much more to remove and it would have been easier provided you have an engine hoist.

Yeah, pulling an engine ain't that bad if you have a cherry picker but good job on getting the heads off with it in there. Amazing. Post a picture of your knuckles now - I bet they are bloody!

Re: Head Removal
Like kuoh said, I was looking for a "a viable option for the home mechanic on a budget". The shops I talked to about doing it quoted me $1400- $2000 labor ALONE to do the job. I believe an ambitious person could do the whole job over a weekend- minus the machine work, of course. I've pulled engines before, but last time I rented an engine hoist it was $30 a day and that was 5 years ago. I didn't want to spend the money this time if I didn't have to. I also couldn't believe what's been stated here periodically and at some repair shops I've talked to- that Subaru would build an engine that you couldn't remove the heads from without pulling the engine.
The disturbing thing about it all is that a quick inspection of the head gaskets didn't reveal any obvious failure points. Still, the car overheats, I've got oil in my coolant, and the coolant is disappearing (out the exhaust). What else could it be? A cracked block? In that case I'll be removing the rest of the engine anyway- Just call me Don Quixote! PS: My mother is typing this for me because of my bloody knuckles.
