PLease help ASAP Alternator problem

I just had my SVX alternator rebuilt. I put it in and it ran fine for few weeks. Then it died. Subaru mechanic said alternator was bad. Took it back to guy who rebuilt it and he said it was fine. Took it back to dealer who put it back in and now says its fine!. I am nervous that there could be something wrong that is only intermittent or is there another reason for the alternator to be fine one minute and not the next?

One caveat is that the first time the rebuilt was put in my husband did it and it was his first time doing an alternator. The second time it was put in by Subaru. Could the problem have been that the alternator was just not in tight enough? We never heard any noise or had any trouble driving it until the day it died. It died during a rain storm . Could this have made it slip if it was not in tight enough?

ONe last thing... The battery is not 100 % now ,it is only down a little Should I insist that it be charged up to full capacity? It was a new battery when the rebuilt was put in.

Thanks,
Mary

Yes, there is a parking light button and the lights will stay one even if the car is shut off. That is what it is for.

It sounds like the battery or the alt needs to be checked out if there are problems even if they are new.

Hi Mary,

Just wanted to chime in cuz this happened to me too (if it wasn't the P light, that is)

Got a bad ALT once. It was "bad out of the box" or so I was told. Most SVX ALT that you buy these days are rebuilds even though they look new.
The bad ALT killed my battery which could explain your predicament.
Have both tested before you return.

And, before you install new ALT have it tested too. Then try new ALT & BATT.

Please clean the ground wire connection point. This leads from the NEG terminal down the "front" side of the battery to a 10mm bolt on the frame. Mine was covered in crap. Remove the bolt and wire brush or sandpaper that area til you see metal. Then clean bolt and washer and put it back on.

Good luck.
Biz

You may want to check your head visors. Som people have noticed that theirs don't always turn off the visor lights when the visor/mirror flap is closed.
