How harmful (if at all) is WD-40

to my acessory belt?

I figured I have a pretty bad belt squeal and it annoys the neighbors so I had better get rid of it.
Before I can actually replace anything I ofcourse am going with a quick fix.

I guess that since they only squeal below freezing the reason they do so is from frost build up.

WD40 to my knowledge disperses moisture.

So I spritz some on the ribbed side of the belt.
Not much.
Just a quick squeeze.
After a second the frost disappears (from vision) and the squealing stops.

I am also under the impression various flammable petroleum based products eat away at rubber.

I know these belts are tough, but I'm wondering how tough and how long a belt can hold out using WD on it every day (I've only done it twice, ever).

My long term plan is to find a belt that can fit the underdrived pulley.

<Mr. Obvious>maybe you should make that a priority as opposed to a long term plan.</Mr. Obvious>

I agree with Alan. Petrochemicals are bad for many grades of rubber. Fixing the problem is better than creating another problem in the future.

They sell belt dressing for that purpose. I would avoid WD-40 for the reasons already mentioned. Maybe it is time for a new belt.

Significant Technical Input
Serp' belts typically don't respond well to any type of dressing. They don't have the same level of pinching action that v-belts do.

Your belt slips and squeals because it's the wrong size, so you want to lubricate it?

Come on, Nik - just get a new belt!

Nick, Nik could just loosen the belt a bit, pinch up some slack and run a sheet metal screw through it to make it shorter, maybe even use a pair of vise-grips... (what a visual)

Agreed. WD-40 on a belt is a big no-no!

Got a new, shorter belt today er, yesterday (long night).

Mr. Obvious -> I worded that wrong. What I meant was my long term fix would be to get a new belt, not make it a long term goal to eventually accomplish.

from your previous posts, i wouldn't be surprised if you made your own belt out of band-aids and a hot glue gun.

Firstly you shoud have two, unless you took out your A/C like I did.
Secondly there is an idler pulley under the PS pump with a bolt sticking out. You tighten/untighten the bolt which moves the pulley which tightens/untightens the belt(s).

I'll give that a try for the sake of experimentation.
