New Computer

This week I was given a new computer at work after my old one died.
The new one has Windows XP on it. So far I don't care much for XP. It seems to have alot of extra non-useful "fluff" which takes up memory.

I also wish the boys at MS would stop changing titles of commands and moving command functions when they issue a new windows pkg.
It's a pain in the butt to have to relearn what everything is renamed and where they put it , every 3-5 years.
Imagine if they did that with cars or sports every 3-5 years.
People would lose interest very very quickly.

you can make the majority of XP act and look like 2000, ask your tech support.

I think you may be missing the point, Chris. Considering Larry is an old fart like me, he's probably thinking more along the lines of Windows 95/98/SE.

(Still using 98SE- I like to stay a couple of bug-free generations behind, thank you.)

If you think 95/98 is a bug-free generation, I think you're the one missing the point.

Very true, I have never been bug-free since Workbench 3

I got a new machine a couple of weeks ago too.

Old workstation from Motorola (IBM IntelliStation M Pro)

Dual Xenon 1.7 with dual scsi and a gig of RAM with Sun 20" screen. Cost: FREE

Is it just me or does DNS and exchange 2k3 different from DNS and Exchange 2k?

I love the outlook 2k3 web access though. Just plain lovely.

Maybe bug-'free' was the wrong terminology. The point was- it usually takes Microsoft a couple of years or so (minimum!) to work the 'kinks' (bugs?) out of their new operating systems. Laying back a couple of generations minimizes the problems (AND the cost).

I understand exactly what Larry's talking about. i.e., I've been a big WinFAX user since the beginning and it always used to bug me that every new release had a new 'desktop'.

The reason why they keep coming out with a "new" version every other year is to maximize on the income. Now everyone "have" to upgrade otherwise, your business is "left" behind. Is it needed? No.

IMO, most organization can live with a PII 200 Mhz machines with 64MB of RAM and 3 GB of drive. Install win2k workstation with RDC on it and run a terminal services on a big server running win2k or 2k3 server. You are set. But everyone has to have the "best" machine is what is helping MS and everyone out. I understand there is a need for the fastest machines but some accountant and some intern does not need a 4Ghz machine with 2GB of RAM and 200GB of space running a RAID 5.

In my greedy opinion, keep those new versions rolling out. I get paid to install OS on machines and I get paid 25/h so MS is my best friend right now.

I'm not an organization, but you've just described the 6 plus year old machine I'm tapping away on right now. But if I ever ugrade to Win 98, I'll give you a call, Lwin.

My personal machine is AMD Duron 900. The carPC is VIA C3 1Ghz and my new server is dual 1.7Ghz Xeons. My NS1 (name server) is a PII 350 with 192MB RAM and 3GB drive running on Win2k Server. Those old boxes still have some uses. My client just tossed ot more PII 350s last week. I had a fun time breaking them apart.

I personally prefer a server with a bunch of thin clients rather than a server with a bunch of workstations. When I was in college, I had the fastest machines. Period. But then it took a while for the processor speeds to jump. Now, it's pointless. And I stopped playing games.

I kinda hang out in the middle. I upgrade every three years or so. I had a PIII (Katmai) 450mhz with 128MB and 20GB. Just upgraded to a P4 (Prescott) 3.0Ghz with 1024mb and 80GB. I will most likely have this computer for a good four years now. I'm getting tired of putting money into this stuff. The good news is since hardware tech is moving so fast, it is light years ahead of software tech. So i'm set for a long time.

I upgraded to XP Pro last year, and just got XP developer this october. I hated XP at first, but after a few weeks of fumbling around and finding everything again, I love it. With Developer though, I find myself fixing a whole lot of bugs. Little ones, but still annoying.
