4.11 diffs in autotranny?
well as some of you know, my transmission is shot.
replacing it with a five-speed will be either too costly, too time-consuming, or both. i've opted to replace my busted-ass 4EAT with a remanufactured one. in order to make myself feel at least a LITTLE better about putting another slushbox in there, i've decided to replace the final drive gears with 4.11's for better acceleration.. this way i can feel like i've made SOME improvement. my question is this: will this have any impact on the future reliability of the car? i understand that my highway rpms will increase and my highway fuel economy will decrease, but let's face it, this isn't exactly an economy car we're talking about. all input welcome -adam |

if you plant to mod to any amount of more power, even putting out 20 more hp from exhaust and a UD pulley... i would recomend agains the 5mt they break
i am keeping the auto and putting 4.11's in mine because my front diff broke... it will decrease your gas mileage on the hwy, probably not as much in the city in stop and go, shouldn't decrease the relieablity remember aircraft builders use the eg33 because its well designed to run at 6000 rpm constantly for hours on end without changing rpms...

As for reliability, the 4.11's should make the tranny hold up better, as it will result in less stress on the drivetrain, and generate less heat(we all know what heat does to a 4EAT )
And it might accually HELP the city mileage, as it will take less work from the motor to get it going from a stop. Just my thoughts on it....

It was a cost thing, It was gona cost between $4,500 to $5,500 to do the 5 speed, we can probly do the rebuilt auto with a 4:11 swap for under $2,000.

If you go ahead, please keep us informed. My wife can only drive auto, and there are no highways over here, so it is a tempting conversion for me.
How would it effect the speedo calibration?

No other Sube has the take off torque, that the SVX has. They may have more developed HP, but at 2000rpm they woun't pull a greasy stick out of a pigs arse. A modified EG33 needs a strong auto on 4.11. Harvey.

The speedo would still be correct, since it is driven off the front diff, so it would register correct for whatever gearset it had in it.

the current line of cars, that have more power than the wrx, ie the forrester turbo.... does not use the same 5mt the forrester turbo uses the old sti 5mt, not the normal subaru 5mt again putting 250hp in a 5mt will very likely break it, unless it is out of a forrester turbo, presumably a baja turbo (which aren't out yet) or a wrx (the wrx does not use the sti5, but does have a beefed up internals, excluding the '02's they had the normal ones) yes it is mostly the driver, and drivers putting 5mt in the svx are not doing it to drive it slowly, they're doing it to drive it spiritedly at the very least

4.11 diffs
Before shelling out cash on 4.11 diffs, you may want to read messages 73727 thru 73729 on the yahoo site:

Everyone has an opinion, I dissagree with his, I know my SVX is quicker with the 5-speed and 4.11's, than it was with the Auto and 3.54's.....I've never taken it to the track, but it is a VERY NOTICABLE differance in the cars performance.
Yes it's RPM's are higher at highway speeds, but no more than the Legacy/Impreza's 4 cylinder was turning in the car the tranny came out of. I myself LIKE shifting gears, so I like it because it FEELS more sporty, not just because it's faster, as my racing days are long gone. The swap is not for everyone, and that's OK by me, It just makes my car a little rarer
