Trans swap Q: '98 Legacy non-OB Wgn
So I've done a lot of searching and reading past threads on 4:11/4:44 tranny swaps and I'm STILL confused. I've got a chance to pick up a cheap 4EAT and rear diff. from a '98 Legacy (NON-outback, NON-gt) 4WD wagon with about 150k miles. Probably a 2.2, but the engine was gone so I'm not sure.
First question- will the tranny fit my '92 SVX? I understand there was a change in '98, something about a spin-on filter? Next question: what is the gearing for this tranny? Third question: is the diff correct? Finally, do I use the Legacy TC or the SVX TC? The current tranny in my SVX works in all gears, it just has a delay engaging, so I don't think my SVX TC's full of "junk" In the same yard is a '98 Impreza OB sport, which understand has a smaller differential. Would this be a better choice. Where could I get a matching diff? Thanks for any help- Dave Last edited by davew833; 04-04-2007 at 04:12 PM. |

I would guess that the "delay engaging" is the ECU (is this on your '92 or your '95?) and not your tranny, so the tranny should be in good shape.
Best of luck with the swap. |

Some '98 trannies did have the spin-on filter. If yours does, avoid it. I am assuming this Legacy is a Legacy GT with the 2.5 engine? The Legacy GT and the Outback are what comes with the 4.44s. Not sure what you mean by "is the diff correct?" Presumably you will be taking the diff from the same donor car which has 4.44s. I believe you can keep the SVX TC if it's OK. Again, verify this. Be aware that there are many possible causes for the "delay engaging".

My search of other threads suggests the tranny delay on my '92 I experience (a few seconds before it engages in "D" or "R", but no slipping at higher RPMs) is a result of the pump gasket going bad and causing a decrease in line pressure at idle. If there's something else I should check, it would be great to know about it before I do a swap.

Spin on filter = no go
You'll use the SVX's TCU Use the "Search" feature on the network to check on compatibility info. SVXFiles did a post a while back that listed all of the years/models that work. As far as the rear diff goes, you'll need to modify the 4.44 diff to accept the LSD out of the SVX's rear. Again, use the "Search" feature for info on the mod (SVXFiles rules again ) -Bill

A standard Legacy Tranny will be 4.11's, but as long as it does NOT have a spin on filter on the side of th etranny, and you get the rear diff out of the same car, you're golden.
The SVX TCU will be fine.
