suggestions on what to do

Hey everyone, um, i just now figured this out for the first time in the first real snow this year. Apparently my rear diff doesn't work. Does anyone know what the most common reasons are and ways to check what it could be. I don't really have the money to take it in.

I guess you mean that the transfer clutch is not working, so there is no drive to the rear wheels.
This is a fault that can be fixed by removing the rear of the gearbox, and replacing the C solenoid/transfer valve assembly.
If you do a search on " C solenoid/transfer valve" you will find a large amount of info.

I am in Australia, so it may be different there. Cost about $400 Aust. and take about 1.5 hours.

Possibly, some have done it. Have a search around to see what others have done.

Didn't see that last bit. Yes the parts are on Subaruparts.com.

Bill (SVXRide) replaced his solenoid C a few years back. He has a few pics in his locker here:

Good luck!
