What to look for on my new 2 me 97

I have about 1 hour to check out my 97 w 109k on it. What are the main specific things to check while it sits on the ground? I know most of the svx pitfalls but could use some of your good pointers. Thanks, pics to follow.

Check the engine bay for rat's nests. I found one in my SVX between the intake manifold and the engine when I got it.

Had one in my dad's Mark 8 in the trunk. A fine mess...

On the test drive floor the car from a dead stop and see if the front wheels spin at all. When driving slowly through a parking, see if the awd system binds when you turn the steering wheel to full lock.

Other than that look for transmission shift flare, engine over heating, tiny cracks in the plastic radiator, oil dripping down onto the under tray from the oil pump and uneven wear in the tires.

Finally, make sure all four tires are on correctly and check for maintenance records!

Check for anything irregular with the idle or slippage between shifts. Make sure all the tires are the same tire, not mixed and matched.

Umm...I'm trying to name things I didn't check that came back at me lol.

Try the brakes out to see if they're warped badly. Make sure it doesn't sound like a train is chasing you when you're at highway speed. If it's chasing you during city driving, that might not be a good thing. The car probably isn't going to be perfect, well it's an SVX so it will be in it's own right, but mechanically may be a different story. Don't get alarmed by every creak, squeak, and groan because they all have their little quirks.

Thanks, all good ideas. It has new Z tires, news brakes, one new rear bearing, and a "replaced" trans-I've replaced 2 of ours so I know what a bad one feels like.

By a "train" sounds, you must mean bearings?

He sez it has a small oil leak that you can occaisionally smell burning off-valve covers?

The tires should spin if the trans is normal, no? And shift "flare" is higher revs from gearchange slipping, yes?

No, the tires should not spin if the dif is working correctly. If something is wrong, you would get front tire spin.

I know I would have a slight problem to get into someone elses car and floor from a dead stop. I don't do that with mine, so I would probably not do it with someone elses.

I am a pessimistic optimistic. I think the worst is going to happen, that way when it does, i don't feel as bad, but if the best happens, i am twice as happy.

I can spin the 4 wheels on our svxs on ice or snow, loose gravel I'd imagine also.
